A quick look at Wednesday’s first pre-season game.
Pre-season just wouldn’t be pre-season without the annual trip to Stainton Park. The first glance of the new team and new players is an eagerly awaited occasion for one and all, this year more than most.
Shopping in the summer transfer market is almost complete and manager Dave Flitcroft has assembled what is on paper, one of the most eagerly awaited squads for a number of years. The gaffer has a good mix of raw talent, experience, pace and an attacking flair in abundance. With the new pitch yet to make its debut as well, things suddenly look very bright.
The first pre-season game though is never about the result or even the performance. Match fitness and minutes on the park is the order of the day, and with that in mind, we’ll see a good mixture of the squad, two or three trialists and one or two young lads from the Youth team, most of whom played a part in the final game of last season at Morecambe.
Managers always say it’s not about the result in games like this, players will say the same, but privately it will more than likely be totally different. No player or manager likes to lose a game, no matter who it’s against.
Radcliffe Borough will provide a test for the lads, they always do – with the exception of one pre-season – the lads will leave the field knowing they have been in a game and knowing they have had to work to win the game.
The bookies have Bury down as either favourites, joint favourites or second favourites. Either way, the pressure is coming from outside. Manager Dave Flitcroft has his own methods, his own way – we’ve already seen some of it, there’s more to come. Wednesday’s game at Stainton Park won’t answer any questions; it’ll probably create more questions. It’s the first game and the first start. There’s plenty more to come.
