Stockport County Blues v Bury FC Ladies
Venue: Stockport Sports Village
Result: Stockport County Blues 3 - Bury FC Ladies 0
Bury FC Lady of the Match: Ellen Thornton
Bury FC Ladies contested another fierce match away against last week’s opponents Stockport County Blues.
The opening 20 minutes were extremely tight with very few chances created. Then, on 25 minutes, Lucy Golding finely threaded through captain Jordon Bailey who cut inside their right full back and shot just over the bar.
Within minutes Bury’s defensive midfielder Ellen Thornton had split the Stockport defence with a further decisive through ball to Jordon Bailey, only for the Stockport goalkeeper to make a great save from Jordon’s powerful strike.
Unfortunately, Bury paid the price for these misses when Stockport’s goalkeeper played a long and high ball up the pitch. Courtesy of some great luck, the ball somehow found its way to Stockport’s number 10 who nicely chipped Kaitlin Saunderson from the edge of the area.
Just as Bury were recovering from the blow of going a goal down, Stockport doubled their lead. Stockport’s number five delivered a free kick into the area and Stockport managed to prod the ball home from close range. The goal was given despite a heavy suspicion of offside in the Bury camp.
Half time: Stockport 2 – Bury 0
Following the half-time break, Bury immediately pressed for a goal in order to get back in the game. But when substitute Deanne Tomkins struck the bar with a header from a corner and Jess Locket shaved the left hand post with a fine shot from the edge of the area, it was clear it just was not Bury’s day.
Stockport then countered following a heavy spell of Bury pressure and scored a third on 80 minutes.
Full time: Stockport 3 – Bury 0. The scoreline flattered Stockport, however a number of lessons were learned by Bury’s young team and they will be much better players for the experience.
