Peter Clarke delighted with his defensive unit

4 August 2015

Defender, Peter Clarke, feels everyone in the Bury squad is ready to work hard for the team throughout the season, and achieve a second season in Sky Bet League One.

The Shakers’ summer signing Peter Clarke, believes his new defensive unit are a young group who are looking to progress their careers and get better.

Especially the clubs new ‘keeper Christian Walton, who has come to Bury on a season long loan from Championship side Brighton and Hove Albion as a highly rated England national team prospect.

Peter believes that the loan deal will work out well for both parties with Christian gaining valuable experience outside of under-21 football, and Bury have captured a goalkeeper that can go all the way.

Talking ahead of the teams League opener away at Doncaster Rovers on Saturday, he said: “Christian is only a young goalkeeper, relatively speaking, but he is a very confident young man.

“I think if you spoke to most people down at Brighton, and everyone involved in the underage teams with England, they would speak very highly of him.

“It’s going to be a benefit to him playing here this season, and I think he’ll get better as the campaign progresses.”

However, Peter was quick to add that it isn’t just Christian Walton who he is excited to work with, the other three players that make up Manager David Flitcroft’s expected starting backline: - Joe Riley, Nathan Cameron and Chris Hussey, are all exciting prospects that can only get better.

He explained: “The other boys in the back four, again are not as old as myself, but they all really want to work hard, want to learn and get better than they already are.

“Everyone in our defence wants to progress their careers and build on the knowledge they already have and the ability they already have.”

It’s not just his defensive partners who he believes will help the team achieve their goals for the coming season though.

He believes that every player is an asset to the team and more importantly they are all on the same page in terms of what they want to achieve and how hard they want to work.

This fact will only bode them well going forward, starting with a tough away match at the Keepmoat Stadium this Saturday, taking on Doncaster Rovers in their Sky Bet League One season opener.

Peter Clarke, said: “We aren’t getting carried away with things. I believe we have a good squad here with a decent group of players, and in an ideal scenario we’d like to be in the top half of the table come the end of the season.

“We have a group of talented players here, every single one of them wants to work hard and do their best for the team.

“The team is the most important thing, and all the individual players have shown that we all believe in that, which gives us a good opportunity to win games.”

The Shakers are expecting a good following in Doncaster, and tickets are still available to buy at the club as well as on the day.
