Preview: U18s v Port Vale

27 February 2015

Bury youth team take on Port Vale this Saturday.

Bury youth team will be looking to get back to winning ways after their disappointing draw against Blackpool last week.

In what will be the third away trip in a row for the youngsters, the Shakers will this time make their way to Burslem, Stoke to face Port Vale, in what will be their fourth game against the side this season.

Port Vale will put up a tough test for the Youngsters, with a number of pacey players in their ranks.

Speaking ahead of the match, Academy manager, Mark Litherland said: “We know them very well after playing them three times this season.

“The last time we played them was in the youth FA Cup, it was a very tight game with us winning 4-3 in extra time.

“They are quite lively up-front, they’ve got three fast centre forwards and they have a dominant centre-back as well.

“Like all games in the youth alliance league – it’s going to be difficult.”

A lot has changed for the Shakers since the game at Blackpool last week, after the announcement on Monday that the club will be moving into Manchester City’s Carrington Training Ground for the next five years.

The youngsters have had their first training session on the pitch Thursday night, and the buzz around the lads is electric.

Mark said: “It’s incredible, it’s like Christmas has come early for them all. A lot of them can’t believe it.

“I think we’re all going to bed at night, wide awake thinking “Wow”. No one knew it was going to happen, so it was a massive surprise for everyone.”

Mark feels that this will be a great spur for the side that sit top of the table, especially as they are heading into the business end of the season.

“I think the players will respond to it, we have that type of group that if you put a challenge in front of them they’ll raise themselves for it.

“They know there’s a level of expectancy at the club now, and we want to go on to bigger and better things.”
