Bury Net Pope

9 June 2015

We are thrilled to announce that Tom Pope is our third major signing of the summer....

The 29-year-old striker has joined the Shakers on a three-year deal after his contract with League One side Port Vale expired at the end of the season.

The prolific goalscorer has received a great deal of interest from several high profile clubs since parting ways with Port Vale, having netted 69 goals since signing from Rotherham in 2011 and we are delighted to have secured Tom’s services.

Pope began his career at Biddulph Vics before moving to Crewe Alexandra, as part of their renowned youth set-up. Tom managed to establish himself in the first team during the 2007–08 season. In total he bagged 17 goals in 38 games for Crewe.

In 2009 Tom signed a three-year contract with Rotherham United for a joint-club-record fee of £150,000.

Pope signed for Port Vale in the summer of 2011, he went on to net 16 goals in all competitions in his debut season. The following season his 31 goals helped the side gain promotion from League Two.

In his time with the Valiants, Pope received several accolades including; becoming the quickest player to reach 20 goals (from the start of the season) in the club's Football League history, the first player in the club's history to win the club's Player of the Year award in successive years, Football League Two Player of the Month in September 2012, Football League Two Player of the Year: 2012–13 and he was voted into the PFA Team of the Year 2012-13.

Tom finished the 2014-15 campaign and subsequently his time at his boyhood club as top scorer again with 12 goals, despite a 13-match absence after damaging knee ligaments in October.

Earlier today David Flitcroft said “I am absolutely delighted with the signing. As Tom’s record shows he is a proven goalscorer and he made a massive contribution to Port Vale during his time at the club.

“He is a renowned goalscorer who can score all different types of goals. With the level of striker that we already have at the Club I am looking forward to whichever strike combination we choose.

“On interviewing Tom it soon became apparent what he was all about and what it was he wanted. He is the ultimate team player who values team work above everything else. He has an incredible work ethic, industry and enthusiasm to his game. His enthusiasm will drive us as a club and players around him. I believe that he is a player that the fans will soon take into their hearts.

“It is a here and now signing and I can’t wait to start working with Tom on a day-to-day basis. There has been a lot of chasing over the past few weeks to ensure that we captured his signature, and it was the sheer determination and persistence from the Chairman and Management Team that got this deal over the line, and for that I’d like to thank them."
