Jacob Mellis was delighted with the win against Walsall on Saturday and how his fitness is now getting to the standard Manager David Flitcroft expects of his players.
The Shakers battled to their first three points of the season against Walsall on Saturday, to move up to 12thin the League. In the process they knocked their hosts off the top spot, and ruined their unbeaten start to the season.
Summer signing, Jacob Mellis spoke to Shakers PlayerHD after the match, and said: “We are delighted, it was a tough match. They were top of the League going into the match and they were also unbeaten, so it was good for us to come here and win.”
Jacob has been a few weeks behind the rest of the squad in terms of fitness, due to joining the Shakers after being without a Club for a majority of the summer.
However, the Midfielder is now slowly catching up with the rest of the squad and after playing a full match in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy last Tuesday at Accrington Stanley, he was given his first start in the League at Banks’s Stadium on Saturday.
He said: “I was happy to get the 90 minutes on Tuesday, I felt sharper and I was glad to get the start on Saturday. It was tiring, but it was good for me to get those minutes in and get fitter. It was a good exercise for all the lads in the midfield, but I’m glad we got through it and got the three points.”
Jacob believes that with the team at David Flitcroft’s disposal and more importantly their team spirit, they will be able to kick on from the Walsall win and show what they can do in the League.
“There’s a good team spirit here, we didn’t have much of the ball on Saturday, but with players like Danny Mayor and Leon Clarke, we can hurt teams.
“Obviously we’ve got the first win on the board now, and we’ve just got to take it from there really.”
