Peter Clarke made his 600th professional appearance during Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Burton Albion, but won't be retiring anytime soon.
Peter Clarke made his 600th career appearance on Saturday at the Pirelli Stadium, a feat that not all players can boast, but has admitted that he won’t be hanging his boots up anytime soon
The 34 year-old central defender has enjoyed a successful career so far with 14 appearances for Premier League side Everton whom he started with as a trainee, while at the Toffees he went on loan to Blackpool, Port Vale and Coventry.
He impressed enough at Blackpool to be signed permanently from Everton for a fee of £150,000 in 2004, during the 2004-05 season he helped the club avoid relegation from League One and as a result won the club’s Player of the Season award.
After another season at Blackpool notching up 109 appearances for the Tangerines, he opted to jump up a League and signed for Championship side Southend United.
Peter spent three years at Southend, with the club unable to avoid relegation in his first season, but pushing for promotion unsuccessfully the next two seasons.
He won player of the season during his last season at the Shrimpers (2008/09) before signing for fellow League One side Huddersfield Town.
This was arguably the best spell in his career, helping the club win promotion to the Championship during the 2011-12 season, he then helped sustain the clubs position in the Championship for two seasons.
After making 225 appearances for the Terriers, he moved back to former club Blackpool, now in the Championship, who at the time were suffering from financial troubles.
Although Peter impressed on his return for the Tangerines, the club were relegated to League One and he opted to sign for Bury who he saw as a club on the up.
He has been an ever present for the Shakers this season, taking plaudits from the fans and staff alike, with this is mind Clarkey says he has a few more seasons in him yet as he is enjoying his football at Bury.
Speaking to Shakers PlayerHD after Bury’s 1-1 draw with Burton Albion where he made his 600th appearance, Peter Clarke said “It’s certainly nice to get that amount of appearances, I’m quite pleased with myself, but there’s still plenty left in the legs yet so a few more would be nice.
“I started a few years ago when it was black and white, laces and the leather balls, not quite, but it was going back a few years ago.
“Perhaps when the time comes and they get hung up then i’ll sit back and think, but i feel in good nick and i want to keep going as long as i possible can do.
“I’m not sure i’ll make Graham Alexandra’s appearance count (1,000 for club and country), but there’s a few years left in me yet.”
