Coventry City 0 Bury 0

The Shakers sealed a valuable point away at the Ricoh Arena in a goalless 0-0 draw with Coventry City.

An injury to midfielder Neil Danns caused a few worried faces in a quiet first half, with Danny Mayor coming the closest on the verge of half time, taking a deflection and saved by the goalkeeper.

Kelvin Etuhu had two chances inside the host’s penalty box but was not able to make the most of the opportunities.

There were two changes for the Shakers after Saturday’s defeat to Gillingham, Kelvin Etuhu and Danny Mayor replaced Jacob Mellis and Nicky Clark in the heart of midfield and on the left wing.

David Flitcroft was forced into an early change just 12 minutes in. Neil Danns picked up an injury but despite trying to run it off and returning to the field briefly, he was eventually substituted for Jacob Mellis.

Hoping to make amends for last season’s 6-0 defeat at the Ricoh Arena, Danny Mayor advanced into the Coventry half before delivering a ball towards the Bury front man Tom Pope, but his cross had too much weight on and went out for a goal kick.

Pope again getting involved in the action, this time his back post header found Nathan Cameron waiting inside the area before he headed the ball towards Antony Kay, the latter had time to turn and hit his shot goalwards but his miskick saw the ball fly far over the crossbar.

Ex Shakers goalkeeper, Reice Charles-Cook, was caught dwelling on the ball by Pope inside the City penalty area on 37 minutes, but the lean Coventry goalkeeper was skilful enough to play his way out of trouble.

The last chance of the first half opened up for Mayor as he drilled the ball towards goal but the deflection from a man in sky blue eased the ball into the hands of Charles-Cook.

Coventry had the greater chance of the opening twenty minutes in the second half. Both City substitutes Jodi Jones and Dion Kelly-Evans combined outside the penalty area before Kelly-Evans could only aim his close range shot into the side netting of Ben Williams’ goal.

An excellent chance for the visitors fell to Etuhu inside the penalty box after some good play by Mayor and Mellis down the left. Etuhu received the ball facing away from goal, turned, and curled the ball over the bar.

Jodie Jones hit back with a chance for the home side just three minutes later on 76 minutes. His pull back to Vladimir Gadzhev layed off a goal bound effort for the Bulgarian international, but Cameron pulled off an all-important block.

On 86 minutes Etuhu had another chance to find the first goal of the game, he sprinted onto the end of a through ball before the onrushing Charles-Cook, but the City goalkeeper stood his ground and denied the Shakers midfielder down low.
