Bury Girls & Ladies FC Under 14 Shakers are Champions

Bury Girls and Ladies FC Under 14 Shakers are pictured with their championship trophy after snatching the South Manchester Girls League in dramatic fashion. Trailing long time leaders Alty Eagles by 8 points, but with matches in hand, the Shakers hit top form with 4 wins and a draw on the title run-in to lie just 2 points behind Alty with one match to play....against Alty who themselves were on a long unbeaten run.

The title -decider was hugely competitive with Alty having more possession, but with determined defending, and a great finish from Cody Taylor, the Shakers led 0-1 at half-time. Alty continued to press, scoring an equaliser with 15 minutes to go, bringing huge cheers from the home supporters who knew a point would be enough for them. Both teams had chances, but then, with three minutes to go, flying winger Annabelle Barnett beat her full back (for the umpteenth time this season) and crossed to the far post where Cody Taylor slid home the title- winning goal.

The whole squad played a huge part in their success, receiving their medals at the league presentation at the AJ Bell Stadium, where captain and top scorer Beth Schofield picked up the championship trophy, and hugely talented defender Annabel Sankey was awarded 2nd place for league player of the season.

Most of the Shakers girls have been with Bury Girls and Ladies FC since age 9 or 10. The progressive local club, run by numerous volunteer managers, coaches and parent helpers currently runs 14 teams, with over 200 girls and ladies enjoying playing football from age 6 upwards.

The club has two strong teams at this age-group, with the Shakers sister team, the Belles, finishing 3rd in the league, after themselves having been under 13 champions last season. Both teams move to under 15 football next season with a change from 9-a-side to 11-a-side.  With this comes the need for more players and we are currently looking for new players in current school Year 9. Any interested prospective players or parents should contact Dave Baggueley 07775 631883 or Steve Byrne 07968 302124 as soon as possible.
