Antony Kay on joining the Shakers, pre-season and the trip to Portugal
Former MK Dons defender Antony Kay admits that the facilities at Bury’s Carrington training ground was a major factor in his decision to join the Shakers on a two-year contract earlier this month and that, coupled with the fact that he lives in the North West, means the 33-year-old centre half is relishing his move to Bury.
Speaking exclusively to ShakersPlayer HD he said “The first day has been very good and obviously the facilities are brilliant, plus I already know a few of the lads and we’ve had a good start to pre-season. There was a lot of bonding going on this morning plus a lot of hard running but hopefully that will start to get easier.
“I came to meet the gaffer and the chairman at Carrington at the end of the season and the facilities we have here are brilliant.” said Kay.
‘He continued “After having the conversation with the manager, the chairman and the staff, it made the decision easier to go somewhere where you feel wanted. They did that for me and the fact that I live half an hour away from the training ground means a lot more time with my family.
“The fact that I am so close was one of the selling points for me, there were other factors but coming to Carrington and meeting everyone and, after chatting with the chairman, it turned in the end to be a bit of a no-brainer.
“It’s a great feeling knowing that you are coming to a facility like Carrington every day, doing your job in a facility like this is brilliant. None of us has any excuses with a training ground like this one.”
For any player, pre-season is usually a period to dread and it's no different with Kay and, after his first pre-season session with the Shakers, Antony joked about his start to life as a Shaker.
“The first session the gaffer put on wasn’t a nice introduction to Bury Football Club, but it was just a case of trying to bond with the fitness coach. No football player likes pre-season, you’ve just got to get on with it but, hopefully, the first week or two will go quicker before we get into the games.”
When asked what Bury fans can expect from him, Antony was honest with his response plus having players in the squad that he knows will certainly help him settle into Gigg Lane.
“I’m an honest centre half, I like to play the ball and I consider myself a leader. Bury fans will have to make their own minds up. I am what I am and I’ve been around a long time. I’ve played with Peter Clarke at Huddersfield and we do have a good friendship there, but there are other players within the squad in the same position so you have to fight for your place and, hopefully, I can do that.”
After experiencing relegation last season with MK Dons, Kay spoke openly about the Shakers first opponents of the season, Charlton Athletic, who were also relegated to EFL Sky Bet League One.
“Charlton, at home, is a nice early test for us, they seem to be going for it as well this season. I know a couple of the players they have signed and they will definitely try to get themselves promoted and back into the Championship. They will come to Gigg Lane hurting and they will be a good test for us to see where we are at the start of the season.”
Manager, David Flitcroft takes his squad to Portugal at the weekend for a week’s intensive training and Kay thinks the trip will be vital to both fitness and team bonding having experienced similar trips with previous clubs.
“It's Portugal next week and I am looking forward to that, it’s always important that when new players arrive into a team that you bond as a team and, for me, it’s vital that you do go away and have that bonding session.” said Kay.
“Obviously it will be nice to go to Portugal and see a little bit of sun, but we all know that this won’t be a holiday. I’ve been to nice places before now and you don’t see anything of the place. When you do get rest time, you’re mostly sleeping. We go on Saturday so it gives us more time to do some running, then fly to Portugal and do even more running.”
