Now that it’s over and done with, we can take a look back at a few facts…
The final position of 14th in Sky Bet League One equals the position at the end of the 2011/12 season, however, this season we have collected 60 points. We have to go back to the 1996/97 season to better 60 points in Tier Three of English Football. The 1996/97 season was of course the Division Three championship season under Stan Ternent.
Another fact to emerge from the game on Sunday is the appearance of Callum Styles as a 75th minute substitute. Callum has unknowingly become the first player to be born in the new millennium to play first team football in the football league. If he had been born 30 days earlier, he would have been the youngest player to play for Bury.
The attendance for the four local derby games (Oldham, Wigan, Rochdale and Blackpool) all brought gates of over 5,000 with the highest being Rochdale (6,470). The Blackpool game just crept over the 5,000 figure with the addition of 13 fans.
The club reached the FA Cup 4th Round for the first time since 2007/08 (Southampton), the last time we played at home in the FA Cup 4th Round was the 1985/86 season in a fourth round replay against Reading, though that year we progressed to the fifth round with a 3-0 victory and a game with Watford).
The club won games v Sheffield United, Colchester and Peterborough both home and away. The last time we beat the Blades home and away was the 1924/25 season (First Division), Colchester was 1999/2000 season and Peterborough was the 1996/97 season.
Another success has been the emergence of players from the Youth & Academy. Matt Foulds came through the system and was sold to Everton earlier in the season. Players such as John Ruddy, Anthony Dudley, Callum Styles, Liam Williams, Rob Bourne, Rob Harker, George Miller and others have been involved with the first team almost on a daily basis and appearing on the bench for games. Anthony Dudley in particular continues to impress following his succesful loan spells with Guiseley this season.
Leon Clarke finished the season with 18 goals, the last time anyone finished the season with more goals was 2010/11 when Ryan Lowe scored a total of 28 goals for the season.
