Club gets behind the fans 'Wear your old shirt day' for Southend United game
For Bury fans with long memories Bury’s fanzine “Where Were You At The Shay?” is still remembered with affection. One of its many successes was launching the original old shirt day in 1996, the same day that Bury won promotion thanks to a comfortable home win v Cardiff coupled with Darlington’s failure to beat Scunthorpe.
Twenty years on, with a nostalgic look back and, following a few suggestions, Old shirt day has been resurrected for the last day of the season game v Southend on Sunday May 8th.
For those of you who weren’t around in 1996 it’s an easy, cheap (free) and entertaining way to round off the season. Simply by having a rummage through your cupboards and by putting on that favourite shirt from season’s past you can get involved.
Did you love your Chocolate & Sky Blue Andy Bishop 10 shirt? Do you have a Matchwinner classic as worn by Tony Rigby? Can you still squeeze into a Spall replica from when you watched Craig Madden setting goal scoring records or maybe, more recently, you have an Efe Sodje shirt and matching bandana or a Dean Kiely goalkeeper shirt?
On the day our snapper in the stands will be picking out supporters in their nostalgic replica kits and, hopefully, we will have a few ex-players who we can persuade to put on the shirts they graced at Gigg Lane and Brian on the mic may pull a few people out of the stands and ask why they have chosen that particular shirt. Maybe the memory of a particular player, a certain game, or maybe it’s just the shirt that the Shakers wore when YOU fell in love with Bury FC?
