Ryan Kidd on 1st Round FA Youth Cup Defeat

2 November 2016

Ryan Kidd reviews the defeat against Oldham Athletic at Park.

1. 1st round of the FA Youth Cup, it’s been a disappointing result. However, there seemed to be strong performances in some parts of the game. How are your feelings’ mixed?

Not mixed; I’m really disappointed that we have ended up losing tonight. Credit to Oldham, I thought they worked really hard, they did what they had to do and they did it well. I thought they were the better team in the first half. Really, we got sucked into the kind of game where it favoured Oldham. We kept giving the ball away, something which we haven’t done all season; we’re a ball playing team. I think the occasion got to us tonight.
We are a a ball playing team. However, the midfield lads didn’t’ seem to want to get on the ball as much, and Oldham pressed us very well. We had a few stern words at half time, and then second half amazingly enough, we started playing, totally dominated the game. I keep saying it week in, week out that there is no threat in that final third. It is poor; we just haven’t got an end product at the moment. It is a shame because two thirds of a-way-up the pitch, we played some excellent stuff.
The lads today up front, haven’t done their jobs, they haven’t done enough, not cutting edge. It’s took a 15 year old, Joe Adams to come on and show 3 of them how to do it, and that really sums up the night to me, that we have got a 15 year old leading the charge and got 18 year old's in there that aren’t doing the jobs.

2. You brought 3 subs on who are younger than your first starting 11. They made such a massive impact in the second half, which is a massive positive for them.

Yes, they did, but they shouldn’t do. I backed all my second years tonight, I told them yesterday that I was going to trust them, and for me tonight, the majority of them have let me down in their performance. Whether it is the occasion or not, they’re a lot better than what they have showed tonight. I know it is only one game, but it a prestigious Cup competition that we want to do well in, and tonight, we’ve gone out really disappointingly to Oldham. Two under 16’s have come on and done really well.

3. Apart from the under 16’s coming on, is there anything else positive that you can take away from tonight’s game?

No, nothing. We spent all of past week talking about Oldham. We have looked at the videos, and it's up to the lads to go and execute a game plan. They will have to learn from this in the near future to become professional footballers. We should have had enough know how, and intelligence in our play, to beat whatever they threw at us and we didn’t. Like I said, we got sucked into a limbo kind of game, we gave the ball away and that isn’t us. We went off our style of play, which I did warn the lads about. Half time we put it right, but we were too late, they were already 2-0 up. I didn’t see my lads wanting to get in that box to score a goal, so all round, I’m disappointed.
