Player of the Month December 2016

10 January 2017

Our Player of the Month for December 2016 has been announced.

Released from Burnley, Callum Styles soon got snapped up by the Bury FC Academy. Scouted around March 2016, he came straight to Bury FC on trial. Soon put with the Youth Team, we offered Callum the two year scholarship.

It’s been nothing but tremendous success for him since he joined Bury FC. Callum became the first 21st century-born player, at just aged 16; he made his first team debut against Southend United at home ground Gigg Lane, at the last game of the 2015/16 season. However, it’s his hard work, effort, commitment and consistency throughout the month of December that has won him the award today, chosen by Ryan Kidd and the Youth Team coaching staff.
Callum made his first bench appearance of the 2016/17 season on Saturday 26th November; he kept his spot for another two games after this, before eventually making his first ever League One start on Boxing Day 2016. This was closely followed by another start on New Year’s Eve 2016, away at Bradford. Both matches Callum completed a full 90 minutes, giving outstanding, and consistent performances, Callum had great feedback from all coaching staff, fellow pros, and scholars. Tom Pope tweeted after the game “I never tweet after a game but the 4 kids (Burge, Miller, Bedeau and especially nobby Styles) were different class today!! #turningpoint”.

Finally, after making it into the starting eleven for a second time against Sheffield United on the 2nd January, Callum won Man of the Match, awarded by our back of shirt sponsors CIBFX.
We would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Callum on his successful journey so far. What he has achieved for a 16 year old has set the Club and the Academy some amazing milestones. Keep going Callum; we can’t wait to see what the future holds for you!

Ryan Kidd:
This month has seen the emergence of another starlet from the Bury FC Academy. Callum Styles first year scholar, aged 16, has forced his way not only into the first team match day squad but has also recently started the last 3 League One matches. Callum came to us at the tail end of last season having been released, surprisingly, from Burnley FC. Mark Litherland had worked with Callum quite a few years ago, and told me, he is the best talent he has ever coached. We beat off several Championship Clubs for his signature, and it wasn't long before we knew we had someone special in the building. Callum has progressed his all round game this season to new heights, and his work rate is now matching his undoubted talent. His emergence into the first team is no surprise to the coaches in the Academy. He is only going to get better. At only 16 years of age, its extraordinary to see him perform highly at this level with the maturity he is showing. It's now important for Callum that he keeps his focus and willingness to improve on a daily basis.
Well done Callum, well deserved, very proud of you.

Callum Styles:
I was given the opportunity make my debut at the end of last season, I’ve used that to push on with the help of Ryan Kidd and Chris Brass, who have stood by me in the past few months whilst I have been with the first team. This support and encouragement has made me more eager to prove to them that they can put their trust, time and effort in me. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the fans at the game and on social media for all the support.

Callum will be accepting his Player of the Month award at this Saturday’s game against Peterborough United at Gigg Lane, 3pm kick off.
