Preview: Lee Clark will advance his pre-season plans this evening with minutes on the pitch still at the forefront, but the introduction of a ‘game-plan’ ahead of this pre-season friendly.
Tactics and movement will be introduced into the game and will become more prominent with the remaining pre-season games as the Gaffer steps up his plans for the first game of the season in just under three weeks’ time.
And whilst his plans for fitness and match fitness is ongoing, his search for players also continues. After losing two players last week and one arriving, Lee Clark is still on the hunt for numbers to bring his squad back up to his correct numbers for the season.
Joe Skarz and Nicky Ajose played no part in Sunday’s game with Huddersfield. This game may still be too early for Joe, but Nicky should play a part in the game but may find himself stuck on the bench at the Moss Rose for most of the 90 minutes.
Nathan Cameron and Danny Mayor both played a part in the game on Sunday. Nathan Cameron was almost back to his best and threw his body in front of balls many times, whilst we saw the ‘drop of the shoulder and shot’ move from Danny Mayor. Both are slightly behind the bulk of the players, but with the injuries that both have been through, is it any wonder. The fact that both are on the field in pre-season games is a huge positive for Lee Clark
Sunday's game showed the manager that there is work to do with some things during the game not that pleasing to him. These are what pre-season games are for, if anything, they highlight any potential problems so that they can be worked on ahead of the Walsall game. The last thing anyone wants is mistakes in the first game of the season.
Again, as we have seen thus far, the starting eleven will bear no resemblance to the starting eleven that is firmly set in the Manager’s head. It’s down to the players to change that idea and to change the way the Manager is thinking before 5 August.
Lee Clark wants players to change his mind, he wants players to give him problems ahead of the first game. The ideal situation is for the Manager to approach Gigg Lane for the first game of the season still not knowing his starting eleven. The lads have until 13:45 on Saturday 5 August to change the Manager's mind.
It’s been a while since we visited the Moss Rose, but if anything is guaranteed – and nothing is in football – it’s the pitch. Renown as a good playing surface, it’s the perfect surface to get the ball down and pass it.
We had glimpses of the Shakers passing game on Sunday, some of it breathtaking at times, but the more they get into it and the better the surface they play on, then surely it will become natural for the lads to ping the ball about when needed – or play that 45-yard incisive pass when needed.
The first away pre-season game will come and go before we return to Gigg Lane on Saturday for the visit of Crewe Alexandra.
