Preview: Huddersfield Town (H)

15 July 2017

Bury FC v Huddersfield Town
Pre-Season Friendly
Sunday, 16th July - Kick Off 3pm

Preview:  A lot has changed since the Sunderland game eight days ago. Two strikers have left, one has returned and, perhaps, the biggest boost, for Lee Clark, is the players’ fitness and, most importantly, a lack of injuries.

In saying that though, there are one or two minor knocks, but nothing serious.  Joe Skarz has a very bruised toe after having his foot trodden on during a pre-season training session in Marbella. Phil Edwards has a sore knee and Callum Styles suffered with the effects of the horrendous heat on the Andalusian coast.

Nathan Cameron and Danny Mayor are progressing well, after their injury woes of last season, to such an extent, that both players took part in full training sessions at some point during the week.

Lee Clark will, again, use Sunday’s game as a “minute gathering exercise”.  There is only so much you can do in training and playing a game against Premier League quality opposition cannot be done the training ground. Minutes into legs brings endurance, endurance brings quality, quality brings results – there is a laid down and set plan for everything.

The trip to Marbella has been hailed a complete success in terms of fitness, team bonding and a lack of injuries and it’s been a stunning week for the lads. They have had a tough week yet none are tired or have been overworked. They have had lots of fitness sessions and lots of football sessions.

The loss of James Vaughan mid-week was fairly inevitable and although there were talks of a new, extended deal, it quickly became evident that he would not sign any such deal on the table. After the season he had last year, can anyone begrudge JV of wanting to succeed elsewhere?  George Miller’s move to Middlesbrough came in under the radar slightly but, again, there is a carefully laid plan to replace him or any player that leaves for whatever reason.

If there’s anything the week in Marbella has proved it’s that Lee Clark is meticulous in his planning and he has planned for every eventuality. Even as he boarded the plane in Malaga on Saturday afternoon, he was making plans and putting things into place.

The arrival of Nicky Ajose was planned. It was simply a case of picking up the phone to Charlton Athletic, once a deal had been agreed with Sunderland, as Nicky had agreed to everything before Vaughan left the Shakers base in Spain.

The quality of opposition is the key to fitness for Lee Clark and you’re not going to better the quality of opposition that arrives at Gigg Lane on Sunday afternoon.  Newly promoted to the Premier League and, having made a raft of signings over the summer, the self-proclaimed pride of Yorkshire will arrive at Gigg Lane as a Premier League Side and everyone at Gigg Lane will welcome them to Bury as a top-flight side and we wish them well in their maiden season in the Premier League.

The new season is just THREE weeks away and the forthcoming game on Tuesday night, at Macclesfield, will see the lads again look for getting minutes into legs but there will be a little more emphasis on tactics and on set plays. The starting eleven, on Sunday, will bear nothing to that we will see in three weeks’ time when Walsall arrive at Gigg Lane.

Pre-season has, thus far, been nothing but successful and it's set for the next stage at 3pm on Sunday and with Premier League opposition in town, what more could you ask for?
