Clark: Can't wait to get on the training ground

Manager relishing Thursday's first day of pre-season training for his new squad

28 June 2017

Lee Clark and his newly assembled coaching team are eagerly awaiting the return of the new look squad to pre-season training as the players return to begin their preparations for the new season on Thursday morning.

The squad has been split into two groups for the start of pre-season training with one group returning to Carrington and another group heading off to Bolton University for assessment, both groups will then switch venues on Friday with the real work commencing, in earnest, on Monday morning.

The gaffer though is itching to get his boots on and return to the training ground and, in looking forward to having his new look squad around Carrington, said:

"I'm delighted with the preparation and the changes that we have made around Carrington.  We've upgraded the facilities and made a few changes and obviously the squad comes back on Thursday, including the new signings.  It’s always an exciting time for any club.

"The fixtures are out, we know where the season starts and what it’s all about. We've had a great cup draw but now it’s all about looking forward and to getting the players back in and being around them again.

"I just want to get on with it now, it’s been a long time, but time that I needed in terms of turning things around with the squad. The changes I have made around Carrington and with the new staff it has been an important time for us all.  Now we are just ready to crack on with the players and get into the exciting work that we have got planned.

"Thankfully, the modern day footballer does not walk through the door on the first day out of shape or overweight. We don't have to spend two to three weeks trying to condition players. We are straight back into football work and getting the fitness levels up, and the first few weeks is all about football fitness.

"That’s why we have picked the opposition that we have got for pre-season games, they will all give us a physical test and a tactical test. The players know what to expect and I have seen many managers saying that their team has to be the fittest, so do we.  If you are very fit, and you have good players on top of that, then you will become successful."
