“We got in very quickly with Jermaine, signing him has shown our intent and I have no doubt that there will be a lot of disappointed clubs, both at Championship and League One level, now that we have secured the signature of a renowned goal scorer. Jermaine is a player that has already been involved with teams that have won promotion to the Championship from this level.
“When I met him, and showed him around Carrington, I was very impressed with his character, his personality, his determination and he was obviously impressed with the facility that we train at on a daily basis. He was also impressed with the ambition shown by both the chairman and the club, and for us to make him our first signing of the summer, shows our intent and what we are trying to do.
“I want to try and get players in that have had a promotion and that have been successful. It’s more than likely that we will not sign all the players that I have targeted but I want as many as possible, certainly from the experienced players that we are looking at, and Jermaine Beckford ticks all those boxes more than once. I’m absolutely delighted that we have got him over the line and it’s a credit to the chairman that he has been able to do this deal so early in the summer.
“A lot of people would imagine that I’ve brought Jermaine in to replace James Vaughan. I haven’t. He is here to play alongside him. James has had an unbelievable season and there is a lot of speculation surrounding him, and rightly so, after scoring 24 goals for a team that finished sixth bottom of League One. It means that he has had a brilliant personal season. Jermaine is here to play alongside James, they have done it before so we know that there is a combination and a partnership there.
“We know that James Vaughan is a sought-after player, you cannot hide good players and you cannot hide bad players. We’ve had enquiries about him and the chairman has knocked some derisory offers back. We are hoping that, with the additions that we are trying to bring in, James will stick around and see the ambition of this club and that he competes with us at the other end of the table.
“If, on the first game of the season, my pairing of Jermaine Beckford and James Vaughan are our front two, then that will scare the living daylights out of the opposition and it will give me a lot of heart in thinking that we can go and get the three points. It’s a terrific combination and a terrific thought for me to have, as a manager, to have that as your potential front two. I’m really excited by that and look forward to that.
“I must stress, to all Bury fans, please don’t think we have brought Jermaine in because we are going to offload James. We have no intention of doing that. Obviously, we know that he is going to attract attention after the season he has had, but for me, this is the James Vaughan and Jermaine Beckford partnership, he is not a replacement.”
