A six-goal thriller at the Keepmoat Stadium saw both sides have to settle for a point each. Doncaster Rovers went 2 up in the first-half thanks to Andy Butler and John Marquis. However, an own goal from Niall Mason just before half-time, and second-half goals from Jay O’Shea and George Miller saw the Shakers take the lead. The comeback appeared to be completed, but an Andy Boyle header left both sides with a point.
Ryan Lowe named three changes to the side that lost 3-2 at home to Northampton on Saturday, as second year scholar Saul Shotton, made his first league start for the Shakers, replacing Peter Clarke. Harry Bunn and Jay O’Shea were also recalled to the starting eleven, as Zeli Ismail and James Hanson made way.
It was far from a perfect start for the Shakers, as Andy Butler headed Doncaster Rovers ahead within the opening 2 minutes. The centre-half got on the end of a floated cross from Doncaster skipper James Coppinger, who found time and space on the right-hand side of the pitch.
The hosts were almost 2 ahead moments later. Marquis was found 6-yards from goal after link-up play between Coppinger and Rowe created space near the byline, fortunately, the post was on hand to keep Marquis from doubling Doncaster Rovers’ lead.
Marquis then called Shakers ‘keeper Joe Murphy into action, as he was found down the left by Niall Mason. Marquis then touched the ball inside, but his curling effort wasn’t hit well enough to trouble Murphy, as he collected the ball with ease.
Doncaster dominated possession throughout the opening quarter, as the Shakers searched for a way into the game.
Doncaster went close again just after the half-hour mark, Houghton carried the ball forward and played the ball through the middle for Tommy Rowe, but Doncaster Rovers’ number 10 was unable to beat Joe Murphy down at his left.
Darren Ferguson’s side did have the two-goal lead not long after Rowe’s chance. John Marquis was found by Blair on the penalty spot, and he was able to lift the ball over Murphy.
Ryan Lowe’s side were back in the game, halving the deficit just minutes after the second Doncaster goal. Callum Styles whipped a dangerous ball into the box from a free kick on the left-hand side of the pitch, the quality of the delivery forced a mistake, as Niall Mason turned the ball into his own net.
Neil Danns almost got the Shakers back on level terms, as he struck the ball low from the left-hand side of the box, but unfortunately, his effort was into the side netting.

The Shakers started brightly in the second-half, and it didn’t take them long to get back on level terms. Just 6 minutes into the half, Danny Mayor played Phil Edwards in behind the home defence with an excellent reverse ball. Edwards was brought down by Matty Blair inside the box, and it was Jay O’Shea who stepped up and converted the spot kick.
It didn’t take the Shakers long to take the lead, and it was George Miller with his sixth of the season. Danns did incredibly well to win the ball and managed to pick out O'Shea who played a brilliant ball in behind to Zeli Ismail, he squared it to an unmarked Miller who tapped the ball in!
The lead didn’t last long though, as Doncaster were level 5 minutes after Miller’s goal. James Coppinger’s corner was floated in at the back post, where the ball was met by Andy Boyle who powered his header beyond Joe Murphy.
As both sides went in search of a winner, Ben Whiteman tried his luck, but his 30-yard effort didn’t have enough dip as Murphy saw it over his crossbar.
Neither side could find that winning goal, as a six-goal thriller came to an end, with both sides taking a share of the spoils, after an incredibly entertaining second half at Keepmoat Stadium.
