We are thrilled to announce that 18-year-old Ryan Cooney, has signed a two-year professional contract, after continuing to impress the Management Team and the Board.
Ryan is a product of the club's thriving Youth and Academy set-up, having joined the Shakers at just 9-years-old. During his 9 years with the club, Ryan has continued to progress through the ranks due to his ability, attitude and work ethic.
Such was his progress within the Academy and Youth Team, the right-back was made captain of Ryan Kidd’s and Mark Litherland's youth side. He led the team throughout their superb FA Youth Cup campaign, where they progressed to the fifth round of the competition, the furthest any Bury side has been since 1966.
This season saw Ryan make his First Team debut, with him coming off the bench in Bury's 0-0 draw away at Rochdale on 26th August 2017. He has gone on to make a further 8 appearances in all competitions with the First Team this season, including his full Football League debut for the Shakers in a 2-0 home defeat to Wigan Athletic on 24th March 2018.
Youth Team Manager Ryan Kidd said: “I am extremely proud and delighted to see Ryan sign his two-year professional deal. He has been the model scholar, showing a fantastic attitude and a hunger to improve on a daily basis.
“Even more satisfying is that Ryan has been at the club's Academy since the age of 9, you can't get any more homegrown than that. Everyone in the Academy should have a sense of pride from his achievements. Ryan has a real affinity for Bury FC and he cares passionately about the club.
“His emergence onto the First Team scene is no surprise to me or Mark Litherland. I hope he continues to develop to his full potential and go on to have a very successful career in the game. Well done Ryan, it's well deserved!”
