On This Day...22nd August

22 August 2018

Our new feature continues, as we take a look at what has happened on the 22nd August in years gone by...

The first recorded game played on 22 August was back in the 1953/54 season when Notts County were the visitors to Gigg Lane for a Division Two encounter.  A crowd of 12,268 watched as both sides played out a 3-3 draw with the Bury goals coming from Eddie Gleadall, Stuart Imlach and a Tommy Johnston own goal.

A 1-0 defeat at Elland Road followed in 1955 with a crowd of 19,700, whilst the next game came in 1959 and a crowd of 11,509 watched as Bury grabbed both points in a 3-1 victory over Colchester United.  The Bury goal scorers that day were Gordon Atherton, Bill Calder and Brian Turner.

The 1964/65 season brought Swindon Town to Gigg Lane for the season opener.  Optimism and hope for the season must have been high come 5pm that day after the Shakers demolished the Robins with an emphatic 6-1 victory in front of 7,106 supporters. The Bury goals came from Tony Bartley, Bill Griffin, a Roger Smart own goal and a Colin Bell hat-trick.

In 2006, Championship outfit Sunderland came to Gigg Lane expecting an easy League Cup game against the Shakers, but with the Black Cats in turmoil and chairman Niall Quinn running the side as temporary manager, the Shakers went on to record a 2-0 victory with goals from Andy Bishop and John Fitzgerald sealing the victory.  Niall Quinn stepped down as manager following the defeat with Roy Keane appointed their new manager the day after.

The last recorded game on today’s date took place in the 2015/16 season and as this feature started, it ends with a thrilling 3-3 draw, this time at Crewe Alexandra’s Gresty Road. Danny Mayor, Tom Soares and Danny Rose were on target for the Shakers.
