On This Day...24th August

24 August 2018

Today's On This Day features clashes with Luton Town, Rotherham United, York City and Burton Albion...

The earliest recorded game on today's date was at the start of the 1949/50 season and a visit to Chesterfield.  The Division Two game finished with a 2-1 win for the Spireites with the Shakers goal coming from a Bill Griffiths penalty.

Luton Town were the visitors at Gigg Lane on 24 Aug 1954, again for a Division Two game, and left for the long Charabanc journey south with nothing after a 2-1 Bury victory.  15,545 supporters were on-hand to witness goals from young Tommy Daniel (Pictured above) and Doug Clarke.

A 1963/64 clash brought good fortunes for the Shakers, with Rotherham United visiting Gigg Lane for a Division Two clash.  8,271 supporters watched as Bury ran out 4-2 winners in the opening game of the season. Goals from George Jones, Frank Beaumont and two from Bill Calder sealed the two points for the Shakers.

The full Bury side that day was as follows: -

Chris Harker, Brian Gallagher, Brian Eastham, Brian Turner, Bob Stokoe, Gordon Atherton, Derek Mayers, George Jones, Bill Calder, Frank Beaumont, Tony Bartley.

Rotherham would gain their revenge though just 13 years later, when they again visited BL9. Only this time they ran out 3-0 winners with 4,707 supporters in attendance.

Another 4-2 win came in the 1985/86 season, though this time the game was a Division Three affair with another Yorkshire side visiting Bury, this time around it was York City and 2,782 fans saw the goals flying in.  Two from Craig Madden, Winston White and a Trevor Ross penalty sealed the points for Bury.

The last game to be played on this date was in the 2013/14 season with Bury visiting the Pirelli Stadium for a League Two game with Burton Albion.   Anton Forrester and William Edjenguele gave the Shakers a 2-0 lead, before the old adage of ‘a game of two halves' took over, with the Shakers completely disappearing for the second half.  Burton managed to equalise in the final minute of the game to make it 2-2.  Video highlights from this game are available below.

In total, the club have played 18 games on the 24th August, winning seven games, drawing four games and losing the remaining seven games.  As for goals – its 24 goals scored, and 26 goals conceded.
