On This Day...28th August

It's 98 years since Bury met Blackpool at Gigg Lane on this day in 1920, the first recorded game to have been played on 28th August.  22,000 supporters were on hand to witness a 2-2 draw with the Seasiders in a Football League Division Two game.  The Shakers’ goals came from Alf Gregson and a Bob Perry penalty.

Another 2-2 draw came six years later at the start of the 1926/27 season, this time as a First Division game.  The previous season had brought the clubs highest ever league position when they finished fourth.  The goals that day came from Wally Amos and Cyril Matthews in front of 25,000 supporters at Gigg Lane.

In 1943, with World War II raging across Europe, the Shakers took part in the North West War League.  Players ranged from those on leave, guest players from other clubs and local lads invited by the club, plus one or two regulars who had stayed at home to help the war effort in the UK.  A 3-1 win against near neighbours Oldham Athletic was recorded with Don Carter, Ranson (guest player) and John Robinson, with a sparse crowd of 1,575 attending.

The 1954/55 season brought Fulham to Gigg Lane for the second home game of the season.  A solitary Doug Clarke goal was not enough though, as 18,174 supporters saw the London side run out 3-1 winners.

A visit to Norwich City’s Carrow Road in 1963 brought success with the first away win of the season.  Bury had beaten Rotherham United at home 4-2 four days earlier, and a Bill Calder goal was enough to claim two points against the Canaries in front of 18,819 supporters, to maintain the Shakers’ 100% record.

In the 1965/66 season, the 28th August brought Derby County to Gigg Lane where just 6,589 fans witnessed the Shakers thump the Rams by four goals to one.  Three Ray Pointer goals plus a fourth from Colin Bell claimed both points in a Division Two game.

The Bury side that day was Chris Harker, Brian Gallagher, John Bray, Brian Eastham, Eddie Colquhoun, Jim Clunie, Tommy Claxton, Jack Maltby, Ray Pointer, Colin Bell and Ray Parry.

Pictured above are three of that side that played that day, along with a fourth who didn’t participate in the game (L to R - Colin Bell, Tommy Claxton, Tony Morrin and Eddie Colquhoun)

The last recorded game on this day was in the 2004/05 season when the Shakers travelled the 6.7 miles to Rochdale’s Spotland.  Goals from Dwayne Mattis, Danny Swailes and David Nugent were enough to secure a 3-0 win for the Shakers with just 3,913 fans in attendance for this local derby game.
