The 29th August 1925 saw the Shakers make the short trip to Ewood Park for a First Division game with Blackburn Rovers. A 25,000-crowd watched as Dave Robbie and Norman Bullock scored the Bury goals to record an excellent 2-1 victory on the opening game of the 1925/26 season.
The same date in 1932 brought Notts County to Gigg Lane where 8,908 supporters watched as Bury ran out 3-1 winners with a brace of goals from John Smith plus a third from Arthur Buttery.
A war-time league game at Everton in 1945 was abandoned after 77 minutes. Floodlights had yet to be created at football grounds and the game was brought to an early end due to it being too dark to continue.
West Ham United arrived in Bury on 29 August 1951 for a Division Two game, and with 10,442 supporters in attendance, the Shakers went on to record a 4-0 win thanks to a Ken Plant hat-trick and a goal from Johnny Simm.
The photo shown above shows Ken Plant during this actual game.
The Bury side that day was:
Lew Goram, Bill Griffiths, George Griffiths, Jimmy Greenhalgh, Les Hart, Les Bardsley, Johnny Simm, Tommy Daniel, Ken Plant, Harold Bodle, George Hazlett
Another 4-0 victory was recorded some eight years later when the Shakers visited Southend United in the third division. It was the club’s first away game of the 1959/60 season. 13,713 supporters were on hand to witness goals from Allan Jackson (2), Bill Calder and Stan Hepton.
In the 1987/88 season, Blackpool were the visitors at Gigg Lane when goals from Nigel Hart (2) and Noel Brotherston recorded a great 3-1 win for the Shakers in Division Three. Just 3,053 supporters saw the game.
The last recorded game on this date took place in the 2015/16 season when Oldham Athletic visited BL9. Lee Croft put Oldham ahead after just 24 minutes but a Tom Pope equaliser just after the hour saw the game finish all square with 5,448 supporters attending.
