On This Day...30th August

30 August 2018

On This Day for 30th August includes another hat-trick and a red card...

The first recorded game for the 30th August was the clubs very first game following the end of the First World War.  The Shakers faced the long trip to Bristol City for a Second Division game, though returned later with nothing to show for their endeavours following a 1-0 defeat.

The 1924/25 season saw the First Division campaign start with a home derby against Manchester City.  Despite a 2-0 defeat in the season opener, a crowd of 33,523 packed Gigg Lane in what would turn out to be a good season for Bury, eventually finishing 5th, but the following season would be better with a 4th placed finish – and still the clubs highest ever finish.

The Second World War leagues brought Bolton Wanderers to Gigg Lane in 1941 and 1942 on this day.  The 1941 game finished 4-4 with Don Carter and George Davies both grabbing two goals each, whilst the 1942 game also saw Bury score four goals in a 4-3 victory, ironically with the same two goal scorers, though this time, Davies collected himself a hat-trick with Don Carter getting the fourth.

1950 brought Preston North End to Bury where a crowd of 16,558 witnessed the Shakers seal a 3-1 victory with goals from Ken Plant (2) and Tommy Daniel.  Two years later and West Ham United were the visitors, though this time the game finished all square at 1-1 with George Griffiths (Pictured above in a game against Barnsley at Gigg Lane) scoring from the penalty spot.

1958 brought Bournemouth to BL9 and 12,045 supporters were thoroughly entertained with a 5-1 victory in a Division Three game.  The goals came from a Bill Ritchie hat trick, Jim Lovie and an own goal from the Cherries’ Ken Brown.

1962 brought Swansea Town to Gigg Lane; it would be another seven years before they changed their name to Swansea City.  Goals from Bill Calder and Tony Bartley secured a 2-1 victory for the Shakers in front of 10,391 supporters.

On 30th August 1997, the Shakers made a Division One visit to Wolverhampton Wanderers.  Goals from Tony Battersby and David Johnson were not enough, though, as Bury went down to a 4-2 defeat in front of 21,141 supporters.

The 1999/2000 season brought Colchester United to Gigg Lane and 3,360 supporters were on hand to witness Ian Lawson grab a hat-trick, whilst Adrian Littlejohn and Andy Preece provided the other two goals.  It would be another 14-years before another Bury player would score three goals in one game, when Hallam Hope grabbed three goals in 2013 against Portsmouth.

30th August 2004 brought Kidderminster Harriers to Gigg Lane for their first-ever visit to the Shakers, though they would leave with nothing following a 4-0 defeat with goals from David Nugent, David Flitcroft and two from Chris Porter.  Bury’s Flitcroft and Kidderminster’s Micky Mellon would both see red cards in this game.

The last recorded game on today’s date was in the 2016/17 season when Morecambe were the visitors to Gigg Lane in the Checkatrade Trophy.  Goals from Zeli Ismail (penalty), Anthony Kay and a brace from Tom Pope secured a 4-1 victory for the Shakers.
