On this Day – 27th December

From the 32 games played on 27th December, Bury have won 12 games, lost 16 and drawn just 4. Of those 32 games, the following five games stand out:

The First:

An 1890 Lancashire League Fixture at Gigg Lane against Fleetwood Rangers attracted just 3,000 supporters, who witnessed the Shakers claim a 2-1 victory thanks to goals from Chris Conway and Jack Plant.

Most Goals:

A total of six goals have been scored twice on this day – A 1938 Division Two clash with Blackburn Rovers at Gigg Lane brought 21,192 supporters to Bury, who unfortunately saw the Shakers lose 4-2 with the two Bury goals coming from Billy Graham and George Davies.

Also, six goals were scored in 1983 when the Shakers travelled to Saltergate for a tier four game with Chesterfield. 4,196 fans were on hand to see Bury claim a resounding 5-1 victory thanks to goals from Wayne Entwistle (2), Joe Jakub (2) and Craig Madden.

Biggest Defeat:

Bury have conceded four goals on five occasions on this day, the two worst being 4-0 defeats – a 1941 North War league Division Two game away at Liverpool, and a 1958 trip to Tranmere Rovers Prenton Park.

Highest Attendance:

40,954 supporters packed Tottenham Hotspurs' White Hart Lane on 27th December 1937 for a Division Three game with the Shakers. Unfortunately, for the majority of those attending, they left unhappy, following a Bury 3-1 victory thanks to goals from George Raynor, George Davies and Jack Ormandy. A team photo from that season is shown at the top of the page.

The Last:

The last game played on this day was in 1994 when Bury made the trip to Carlisle United’s Brunton Park for a Division Three (Tier 4) game. 12,242 supporters were on hand to see the home side claim a 3-0 victory.
