On This Day...12th December

Life as a Shaker for the 12th December begins with a 3-2 victory over Wigan, in a friendly game in the clubs very first season in 1885. The goal scorers and attendance for the game is unknown.

The first Football League game took place in 1896 and a visit to Liverpool, though it wasn't such a good day for Bury as they suffered a 3-1 defeat in front of just 7,000 supporters. Bury's only goal coming from the mercurial Jack Plant.

1908 saw the same fixture reversed with Liverpool visiting Gigg Lane for a Division One clash. 10,000 supporters were at the game and witnessed a Shakers' 2-1 victory, thanks to two goals from Billy Hibbert.

A 1925 visit to Leicester City's Filbert Street brought success for Bury in a Division One game. 23,000 fans were on hand to witness Bury take both points in a 2-0 victory, with the goals coming from Jack Ball and Billy Stage.

Charlton Athletic made the long trip North in 1931 for a Division Two clash with the Shakers. Just 5,834 fans were in attendance as the Shakers completed a resounding 6-0 victory with the goals coming from Billy Whitfield, John Lindsay (2), Norman Bullock, JR Smith and a Pitcairn own goal.

A 1953 Division Two game with Plymouth Argyle at Gigg Lane brought a crowd of 10,314 supporters, who witnessed a Bury 3-0 victory thanks to goals from Walter Kelly and a brace from Eddie Gleadall.

The Cobblers of Northampton visited BL9 in 1992 for a Division Three (tier 4) game with the Shakers. 1,954 supporters watched on as goals from Kelvin Hulme (x 2) and a Terry own goal secured a point in a dramatic 3-3 draw.

In 2006, Bury travelled to Chester City for an FA Cup 2nd Round Replay with Chester City. 2,810 supporters were on hand to see the Shakers record a fine 3-1 victory, thanks to goals from Andy Bishop, Glynn Hurst and Dwayne Mattis; however, the Shakers would be thrown out of the competition and the result reversed after it was found that Stephen Turnbull was not registered to play.

The last recorded game on this day took place in 2015 and a League One (tier 3) clash with Chesterfield at Gigg Lane. 2,962 supporters watched as Danny Mayor (pictured at the top of the page) scored the only goal of the game to record a 1-0 win.
