Young Shakers Progress To Semi-Final

10 December 2018

The young Shakers progressed on penalties in their Youth Alliance Cup Northern Quarter-Final against Preston North End. Penalties were required to separate the sides after playing out a 1-1 draw at UCLan Sports Arena.

In a game of few clear opportunities, the Shakers almost took the lead inside five minutes with Femi Seriki looking to capitalize on a loose ball, unfortunately Cottam was able to thwart any danger.

Joe Adams whipped a free-kick into the area, midway inside the attacking half. Cottam caught the ball, setting Dolan on a counter-attack where he was unable to test Moloney in the Bury goal.

The deadlock was broken as Jack Hatton fired Bury into a 21st-minute lead. Hatton brought down a cross on his chest, before connecting with it beautifully on the half-volley. His effort found the far corner to fire his side ahead in sublime fashion.

HALF-TIME: Preston North End 0-1 Bury

Despite being a goal down, Preston looked menacing going forward after the break. A free-kick allowed O'Reilly to glance a header into the bottom corner to level the scores.

Bury responded well to the equaliser. Joe Lilley and Seriki threatened with clever interplay, as they looked to re-take the lead in a tense last eight tie.

Scott Moloney pulled off a vital save five minutes before the end. The Preston number 7 audaciously looked to win the game for the hosts, trying to beat the Bury 'keeper from outside the area. The effort looked destined to find the back of the net, but Moloney did exceptionally well to keep the scores level.

The Shakers were set for a nervy stoppage time, as Sam Allardyce was sent-off after catching O'Reilly. The defender was cautioned minutes earlier. Preston couldn't push home that advantage in the little time remaining and it was the lottery of penalties to decide the winner.

Ryan Kidd's side were to be victorious on penalties. After the first set of spot kicks they found themselves behind. However, two misses from the last two for Preston allowed skipper Joe Adams to step up to win the game for the Shakers. He kept his nerve, calmly firing beyond Cottam to win the shoot-out for his side.
