Match Report: Bury 1 - 1 Everton

18 July 2018

Bury played out a 1-1 draw with Marco Silva's Everton at the Energy Check Stadium at Gigg Lane in The Shakers’ final home game of pre-season.

The first chance of the game fell to Cenk Tosun in the 10th minute. He was found in the box by Kevin Mirallas, but his curled effort was just short of the top corner.

Bury were threatening the Everton goal in the 20th minute as a free-kick from the left was cleared behind, with the subsequent corner eventually landing for Neil Danns, he hit a low strike, but it was well blocked by Kieran Dowell.

Bury continued the pressure as they worked the ball around the box with Eoghan O'Connell picking out Miller at the back post, but the right-back was offside.

Some nice link-up play between Mirallas and Tosun switched to the right with Seamus Coleman and Kieran Dowell. Coleman tried to pick out Tosun in the area, but his threaded through ball had a bit too much behind it.

Just after the half-hour mark, Marco Silva's side were awarded a free-kick 20-yards out after Mirallas was fouled. Leighton Baines fancied his chances and struck the ball well, but it was inches over Joe Murphy's bar.

In the 43rd minute, the deadlock was broken. Nicky Adams' free-kick was cleared and played back into the box, the ball was then chested through to Neil Danns who finished smartly past Maarten Stekelenburg to give the Shakers the lead going into the break.

Eight minutes into the second-half, Sandro escaped down the right and delivered a cross to the near post. Substitute Oumar Niasse advanced and made good contact but saw his effort bounce back off the woodwork.

Unbelievably, Niasse was to be denied by the same post on two further occasions in the space of a few minutes. From the centre of the box, he struck the ball with the inside of his right boot but just failed to keep his shot inside the post. Moments later the striker looked set to put things level but sent the ball crashing into the woodwork for a third time.

Niasse's persistence soon paid off when a looped ball caused confusion amongst the Bury defence, he latched onto the ball but Murphy was there to block the shot, seeing the ball fall back into the striker's path and he fired it over Saul Shotton on the goal line into the back of the net to put things level.

Bury had a good chance to go back in front in the 70th minute, but substitute Jordan Archer could not get on the end of Stephen Dawson's through ball. Had he done so, the striker would have been through on goal.

Everton were going in search of a second. Mo Besic carried the ball through the middle of the field and fed Jonjo Kenny on the right who delivered a good ball to Cuco Martina at the back post, but his header was denied by substitute Mathew Hudson's right post.

The final chance of the game fell to the visitors. Hudson found himself as the late hero for the Shakers, as he pulled off a fantastic save to send Niasse's low strike out for a corner. The young 'keeper ensured that Bury came away with a draw, by diverting the resultant corner in what was the final act of the game.
