Match Report: Southport FC 3-1 Bury

28 July 2018

Dominic Telford made his Shakers debut as Ryan Lowe’s men finished their pre-season with a 3-1 defeat to Southport at The Merseyrail Community Stadium, after a brace from Mike Phenix and a goal for Jack Sampson. Nicky Adams scored his first goal since re-joining the club in the summer in reply for the Shakers.

The hosts had the first chance of the game as Dion Charles put a dangerous ball into the box, Bradley Bauress was the target, but Southport’s number 7 was unable to head past Joe Murphy in the Bury goal.

Charles looked to create again for Southport, finding himself on the end of a deep Osborne ball, his teasing ball powered across the box evaded everyone, and the Shakers managed to deal with the danger comfortably.

Southport took the lead after 21 minutes as Mike Phenix found space just inside the Bury box. He fired an effort into the bottom left-hand corner, Murphy got a hand to it but it wasn’t enough to keep the ball out, the Bury ‘keeper saw it late as Tom Miller was trying to stop Phenix.

Phenix doubled his tally for the afternoon just after the half-hour mark. Murphy played the ball up to Aimson, taking Phenix out of the game, the Bury defender then tried to head the ball past Phenix to Murphy, however, Aimson didn’t get enough on the ball, and Phenix was there to lob into an empty net, despite the best efforts of the back-tracking O’Connell.

Osborne tested Murphy; his ferocious low strike was kept out well by the Shakers' shot-stopper, as he turned the ball behind the post.

The Shakers halved the deficit with what was the last kick of the half. Nicky Adams was found by Neil Danns on the left, Adams then worked his way into the area, before curling a stunning ball past Dan Hanford into the top corner.

HALF-TIME: Southport FC 2-1 Bury

A plethora of changes were made at half-time as Ryan Lowe looked to see who will make the grade and make his starting XI, as the Shakers host Yeovil on the 4th of August when they kick-off their SkyBet League Two campaign.

Minutes into the second-half the Shakers were almost level. Neil Danns struck a free kick about 20-yards from goal after Chris Dagnall was hacked down. Today’s skipper hit his effort low around the wall, but the post denied him an equaliser.

Bury continued their hunt for an equaliser. Neil Danns won the ball back brilliantly before Dagnall shrugged off the challenge from a defender as he found Danny Mayor down the left, his cross was blocked behind for a corner which saw Gold Omotayo almost head the ball beyond Hanford from 8-yards.

Chris Dagnall should’ve put the Shakers back on level terms 64 minutes in. Mayor worked some space on the edge of the area before unleashing a powerful shot on the Southport goal, Hanford couldn’t get the ball under control, but the rebound couldn’t be converted by Dagnall from close range as the ball fell to him quickly.

Nervy moments for Southport as Danny Mayor continued to try and create for the visitors, his dangerous ball into the box was deflected off 3 or 4 home defenders before going out for a corner.

As the game entered the closing 10 minutes, Southport restored their two-goal cushion. Jack Sampson headed past Hudson as Phenix turned provider with a good ball in from the left-hand side.

Phenix then looked to complete his hat-trick as he raced away from the Bury back line, but Hudson got down well to deny him the match ball.

Moments later Charles came close to adding a fourth for Southport, as, despite a deflection, the ball nearly found a way in at the bottom corner.

Ryan Lowe now faces some tough decisions this week, as there are still a handful of trialists at the club, and an opening league weekend starting eleven to select as Yeovil Town visit the Energy Check Stadium at Gigg Lane.
