Shakers Sign Stokes

16 July 2018

Bury Football Club are delighted to announce that Chris Stokes has joined The Shakers on a free transfer from Coventry City signing a two-year deal.

The defender who is described as a versatile left-back, who can also play at centre-half, started his career with Bolton Wanderers where he captained the Youth Team during their successful run in the Youth Cup during the 2008–09 season.

In August 2009 Chris joined Crewe Alexandra where he stayed for a season before joining Forest Green Rovers, making over 130 appearances for the Conference side.

In February 2015 Stokes began training with League One side Coventry City, as a result, Stokes signed a 28-day loan deal with the Sky Blues. He made his debut on the same day in a 2–2 draw against Sheffield United.

After a promising start to his loan spell, it was extended until the end of the 2014-15 season. Chris went on to help Coventry retain their League One status before the completion of his loan. On 29th June 2015, he made a permanent move to Coventry City after parting ways with Forest Green Rovers.

During his time with the West Midlands club, Chris made almost 100 appearances in all competitions and helped them to Checkatrade Trophy success and then get back to League One at the end of the last season via the play-off final at Wembley.

Chris said: “I'm delighted to have signed for Bury. It has probably gone on a while longer than I wanted it to, but I'm really happy to finally be here.

“Once I spoke to the Manager and the staff I was really excited to join and to get it over the line.

“Now I'm here I just want to get things going and get working.”

Ryan Lowe said: “We felt that we wanted competition for the left-back position and that Chris would be a great addition for us, as he's recently been promoted from League Two to League One with Coventry.

“Chris knows what it takes to achieve in League Two; he's a great professional and a very good footballer, who comes with a pedigree.

“Coventry were up there in keeping the most clean sheets last season with Chris as part of their defensive structure.

“I'm thrilled to have Chris on board and I'm really looking forward to working with him.”
