The curtain has now come down on what has been a successful season for our Ability Counts football teams. The 2017/18 Greater Manchester Ability Counts Football League season saw Bury Shakers back in the Championship, and a new team formed, headed up by Football College students Paul Chandler and Raffi Rubens; this team go by the name Bury Shadows and began the season in League One.
The league went all the way to the final day where the Shadows gained a draw over Burnley Disability, and third place Heyside beat second-place Wigan Athletic Disability to leapfrog them into second. The Shadows ended their first season at the top of League One by three points. Shadows player-manager Paul Chandler had the following to say:
“I couldn’t be prouder of the lads, we have worked well all season as a team, and all built up a great rapport with each other. I always knew that we had the quality in depth, that with the confidence, togetherness and commitment from all of my players is what got us over the line. The season may be finished, but we don’t stop working hard and preparing for the Championship next season”.
Not only did the Shadows win League One, but they also picked up the FA People's Cup regional winners trophy. Elsewhere in the Championship, the Shakers finished their first season back in 5th place. After a slow start to the season, they turned a corner after Christmas and looked difficult to break down, picking up a lot of points. They have also been awarded the fair play award for 2017/18 as voted for by the league referees.
Well done all!
