Free-flowing attacking from the Shakers continued at the Energy Check Stadium at Gigg Lane, as yet again Ryan Lowe’s side smashed in 4 goals, this time putting Michael Duff’s Cheltenham to the sword in a 4-1 victory. A Nicky Maynard brace, along with goals from Chris Stokes and Byron Moore saw the hosts take all 3 points, despite Chris Clements’ response for the visitors.
There was just the one change to the starting eleven for the Shakers as Ryan Lowe brought club captain Neill Danns back in for Barnsley loanee Callum Styles.
Bury dominated the opening exchanges. Jay O’Shea came close with a sneaky free-kick, curling an effort low and round the wall. However, Flinders was across to collect the ball smartly.
Byron Moore then went down in the area under a challenge from Flinders after knocking the ball beyond him to the right. Carl Boyeson didn’t feel there was anything wrong with the challenge, as Moore had to settle for the corner. The Bury players weren’t up in arms about the decision.
The resulting corner brought the breakthrough for the Shakers. The corner was worked into the box and across the face of the goal. Chris Stokes was on hand to turn the ball into the net, wheeling away in celebration for the first time in a Bury shirt!
The hosts weren’t able to keep a clean sheet as Chis Clements nodded the hosts back on level terms after 25 minutes. Tyrone Barnett won the ball back in the middle of the park, setting the counter-attack off, finding Forster. His cross was perfectly onto Clements’ head, who left Murphy rooted to the spot, finding the far corner of the net.
The visitors thought they should have had a penalty just over half an hour into the contest. Callum McFadzean challenged Broom in the area who went down under the challenge, but Boyeson again said no penalty.
For a third time this evening, all eyes were looking at referee Carl Boyeson. Again, it was Byron Moore on the floor in the box. He drove at the Cheltenham defence brilliantly, skipping past a handful of defenders. He appeared to be caught as he looked to pull the trigger, but it was another no penalty decision from the official.
Six minutes before the break, the Shakers retook the lead! Neil Danns and Nicky Adams linked up well on the right, allowing the latter to thread Jay O’Shea in down the right. He pushed into the box, before firing the ball across the box to Maynard, who makes no mistake in slotting the ball home!
HALF-TIME: Bury 2-1 Cheltenham Town
The visitors came out brightly. Boyle found Varney down the right. Luke Varney cut inside and flashed a ball into the middle across the face of goal, and he almost saw the ball nestle in the far bottom corner of the goal.
The Shakers came forward themselves, with Aimson almost making it two in four days as he flicked a Nicky Adams corner towards goal. Fortunately for the visitors, it was just over Scott Flinders’ bar.
The home side were looking threatening from corners. This time a sharp few passes had Danny Mayor in a dangerous amount of space on the edge of the area. He looked to rifle an effort low at Flinders’ near post, however, he could only find the side netting.
Former Shaker Chris Hussey did well to beat Nicky Adams on the left. Eventually Addai gets a header away, but Murphy wasn’t troubled as Bury remained a goal to the good.
72 minutes into the encounter the Shakers had a third goal, opening up a 2-goal cushion on the visitors as Byron Moore made it 3-1. He won the ball back with a sharp interception midway in the attacking half. He glided beyond two defenders with some smooth footwork. He bared down on goal, leaving Cheltenham defenders in his wake. He then slotted the ball beyond Flinders to the far right-hand corner with an ice-cool finish.
Just 7 minutes later, the Shakers registered a fourth goal in a single game for the 6th time already this campaign. Jay O’Shea’s intricate dinked through ball was immaculate, finding Nicky Maynard down the left. He brought the ball down with the outside of his right foot, managing to push the ball forward at the same time. He then powered an effort at Flinders’ near post, seeing the ball rebound off the woodwork and into the back of the net.
Nicky Maynard tried to complete his hat-trick before the whistle, but to no avail. He’ll have to settle for just the 2 this evening as the Shakers end November on a high!
