On This Day... 26th November

26 November 2018

Over the club’s long history, 22 games have been played on 26th November.

The first came in the 1887/88 season with a home friendly game against Fleetwood Rangers. 1,000 supporters were in attendance as two goals from Hitchin won the game 2-0.

Bury made the short trip to play West Manchester in 1892 for a Lancashire League game. The match attracted 3,500 supporters and was a successful run out for the Shakers, as they secured a 3-0 victory thanks to a Billy Barbour hat-trick.

The first Football League game on this day took place in 1898 with an away trip to Everton. 10,000 fans watched on as a single goal from Michael Kelly secured the points for the Shakers in a 1-0 win.

Derby County visited Gigg Lane in 1921 for a Division Two clash. Approximately 10,000 supporters were in the ground to see the Shakers record a 2-0 victory, thanks to goals from Fergus Aitken and James McCrae.

The Shakers have played Plymouth Argyle three times on 26th November. At home in 1932, away at Home Park in 1938, and at Home Park again in 1955. Bury won all three games (All in Division Two). In the 1932/33 season, the game finished 2-1 thanks to goals from Wally Amos and Alick Robinson. In 1938/39 it was 1-0 with Jack Ormandy scoring the only goal of the game. The 1955 game ended 4-1 with Walter Kelly scoring two, with Eddie Gleadall and Tommy Daniel amongst the goals.

A 1966 visit from Wolverhampton Wanderers brought more success for the Shakers, as Bury recorded a 2-1 victory in front of 7,762 supporters. Bobby Owen and Brian Turner were on target for Bury to secure the win.

Gillingham arrived in Bury in 1976 for a Division Three game. 4,613 supporters watched as Bury ran out 3-1 winners thanks to goals from Jimmy McIlwraith (2) and an Andy Rowland penalty.

In 1988, Bury had a successful trip to Bristol Rovers for a Division Three game, coming back North with maximum points in a 3-1 victory, with the goals coming from Steve Elliott (2) and a Reece own goal.

The last recorded game on this day took place in 2016, as the Shakers came up against Millwall in a League One tie. The visitors left Bury with all three points after a 3-2 win, with both Bury goals coming from James Vaughan (pictured at the top of the page).
