On This Day... 5th November

5 November 2018

27 games have been played on Bonfire Night over the club’s long history, starting with an 1887 Lancashire Cup tine with Heywood at Gigg Lane.

4,000 supporters were on hand to witness goals from Holt, Richardson and two goals from a ‘Scrimmage’ as the Shakers recorded a 4-1 victory.

1891 brought Rossendale to Gigg Lane for a friendly fixture. 3,000 supporters witnessed a 2-0 win thanks to goals from Chris Conway and Wilkinson.

A year later, Heywood Central were the visitors for a Lancashire League game. Goals from Barlow (2), Bourne (2), Plant and a ‘Scrimmage’ recorded a 6-1 win in front of 2,572 supporters.

Preston North End provided the opposition for the first Football League game played in 1898. 4,000 supporters watched as goals from Sam Bennett, James Settle, and Charlie Sagar recorded a 3-1 victory.

South Shields arrived at Gigg Lane for a Division Two game in 1921 where 12,000 supporters witnessed a solitary John Aitken goal to record a 1-0 victory.

In 1932, Bury made the short trip to Deepdale for a Division Two game with Preston North End. It proved to be a successful trip for the Shakers with a 3-1 victory thanks to goals from Wally Amos, Alick Robinson and Les Vernon with 13,000 supporters at the game.

1949 saw Bury on the road again, this time to Sheffield United’s Bramall Lane, where a crowd of 25,735 supporters witnessed both sides share the points in an eight-goal thriller. Bury’s four goals came from just two players with Fred Worthington (Pictured at the top of the page) and Don Massart each scoring a brace.

Doncaster Rovers were the visitors on 5 November 1955 for a Division Two game. 8,921 fans were on hand to witness a 5-1 victory for Bury with goals coming from a Doug Fletcher hat-trick, Tommy Daniel and Walter Kelly.

In 1974, Peterborough United made the trip North for a Division Three game with the Shakers. 4,663 supporters were on hand to witness a fine 3-0 victory for the Shakers thanks to goals from Chris Duffy (2) and Hughen Riley.

Bury would not win again on this day until 2011 when we visited Oldham Athletics’ Boundary Park for a League One (Tier 3) game. It certainly proved to be an entertaining game with the Oldham 'keeper being sent-off after ten minutes. Andy Bishop converted two chances in eight minutes before Lenell John-Lewis was shown a red card in the final minute, though the Shakers won the game 2-0 with 5,149 supporters watching.

The last recorded game on this day took place last season and an FA Cup 1st Round tie with non-league Woking. Michael Smith gave the Shakers a 1-0 lead, only for the hosts to level the tie some 20 minutes later. The game finished 1-1 and went to a replay at Gigg Lane.
