On This Day...12th November
The first recorded game on this day took place in 1887 and a friendly clash away at local side Rawtenstall. Bury lost the game 5-0 with no further details on this game recorded.
It was a different matter some five years later though when Bury made the trip to Nelson in 1892 for a Lancashire League fixture. 4,000 supporters were on hand to witness an eight-goal thriller with the Shakers coming out on top with a 5-3 victory thanks to goals from George Bourne (3), Spence – though the scorer of the 5th goal remains unknown.
Bury were amongst the goals again in 1904 when Sheffield United visited Gigg Lane for a Division One game in 1904. With approx. 8,000 supporters watching, the Shakers ran amok scoring seven goals to the Blades' one consolation goal. The goals came from Chris Sagar (4), Billy Wood (2) and Herbert Swann.
1910 brought Middlesbrough to Gigg Lane for a Division One game where 9,000 fans watched as the Shakers claimed both points with a 4-2 victory thanks to goals from a Bob Currie hat-trick and Tom Kay.
Manchester United were the visitors in 1932 for a Division Two game. A crowd of 22,097 watched on as Wally Amos and Billy Chalmers scored the two Bury goals in a 2-2 draw.
1949 brought Grimsby Town to Gigg Lane for a Second Division clash. Harold Bodle, Harry Whitworth and Tommy Daniel (pictured below) scored a goal each as Bury recorded a 3-1 victory in front of 10,281 supporters.
1960/61 was without doubt the Shakers' best ever league season. Notts County were the visitors for this Division Three clash, where 8,884 supporters left the ground having been entertained with a resounding 7-0 victory thanks to goals from Johnny Hubbard (3), Bill Calder (2) and Don Watson (2).
1988 saw the Shakers make the short trip to Bolton's Burnden Park for a Division Three game, where a crowd of 7,897 supporters saw the Shakers record a fine 4-2 victory thanks to goals from Steve Elliott, Gary Leonard and a Liam Robinson penalty.
2006/07 saw the Shakers live on BBC's Match of the Day with an FA Cup 1st Round game at Weymouth. Marc Pugh and Andy Bishop (pictured at the top of the page) scored the two Bury goals in a 2-2 draw, with just over 2,500 supporters at the Stadium.
The last recorded game took place in 2016 when Southend United visited Gigg Lane. A James Vaughan penalty proved to be just a mere consolation goal as the Shakers suffered a 4-1 defeat with 3,033 supporters watching.
