On This Day 19th November...

Over the club's long history, we have played 25 games on 19th November – with the first coming back in 1887 and a friendly game here at Gigg Lane, or as it was known then – Mr Barlow's Bottom Field. Rossendale were the visitors and in front of just 1,000 supporters, the game finished 1-1 with George Ross scoring the Bury goal.

Five years later, the two clubs met again at Gigg Lane in the FA Cup, a third-round qualifier – though this time the outcome would be very different, with Rossendale claiming a 7-1 victory in front 4,733 supporters. The Bury goal scorer remains unknown to this day.

Liverpool were Gigg Lane visitors in 1898 for a Division One game. The game attracted a crowd of 7,000 supporters, who watched as a double from James Settle and a strike from Michael Kelly recorded a fine 3-0 victory for Bury.

The Shakers would not win again on 19th November until 1932. By now a Second Division club, they made the trip to Nottingham Forest where a crowd of 10,000 witnessed a great Bury win by two goals to nil, thanks to goals from Dave Robbie and Les Vernon.

1955 brought Stoke City to Gigg Lane for a Second Division clash. Just 9,030 supporters were on hand to see a solitary strike from Tommy Daniel be enough to claim both points. The Bury side that day was as follows: -

Lew Goram, Don Wilson, Eric Massey, Don May, Norman Neilson (pictured at the top of the page), Henry Cockburn, Johnny Robinson, Walter Kelly, Doug Fletcher, Tommy Daniel, Bill Redman

1957 saw Bury back in FA Cup action and a first round replay against non-league Bishop Auckland. The original game played just three days previously had finished 0-0. The Shakers made no mistake this time around and avoided a giant killing with a 4-1 victory thanks to goals from John Parker (2), Jimmy Reid and an own goal from Thursby.

1960 saw Bury on the road to Bournemouth. The long away trip for this Division Three game would be a fruitful one, as goals from Johnny Hubbard and two from Allan Jackson (one from a penalty) would secure a 3-0 victory.

Back to the FA Cup and a first round game at Boston United in 1983. Goals from Craig Madden and a double from Wayne Entwistle would secure a 3-0 victory in front of just 2,624 supporters.

Burton Albion provided the opposition in 2010/11 at the Pirelli Stadium. A foggy Friday evening proved to be a good omen for the Shakers, as goals from Mike Jones, Nicky Ajose and Efe Sodje claimed a stunning 3-1 victory.

The following season, Bury made the trip to Walsall for a League One game. Bury were in buoyant mood on the day and recorded a great 4-2 victory thanks to goals from Peter Sweeney, Mike Jones, Steven Schumacher and Lenell John-Lewis.

The last recorded game on this day was in 2016 and a long trip to AFC Wimbledon. Bury had been humbled by the same opposition 5-0 in the FA Cup just four days earlier, a result which ultimately forced a change in manager for the Shakers and this second game would bring no further joy with a 5-1 defeat, with James Vaughan scoring the only goal for Bury.
