On This Day...1st November

1 November 2018

Only 19 games have been played on the 1st November throughout the club's long history, with the very first game taking place way back in 1890. A Lancashire League game against Burnley Union Star. The Shakers won the game 6-1 with four goals from Chris Conway, Fielding and Jack Plant.

However, during the later stages of that season, Burnley Union Star were expelled from the league and all their fixtures expunged. This result and the 4-0 victory some seven days later would count for nothing come the end of the campaign. Burnley Union Star disbanded in 1891 and abandoned their Rakehead Stadium. Burnley FC bought the main stand from Rakehead, dismantled it and moved it, where it was rebuilt at Turf Moor as their North Stand or as it was known then – the 'Star Stand'.

1919 saw the Shakers away for a Division Two game against North East side South Shields, where 15,000 supporters were on hand to witness the home side claim a 2-0 victory against the Shakers.

An away game at Wolverhampton Wanderers in 1930 brought misery for Bury as they went down to a 7-0 defeat in front of 12,000 supporters, though it wasn't to be the heaviest defeat on this day.

A 1941 North West War League First Division game at Burnley brought 12 goals in the game, though only three were scored by the Shakers with George Davies scoring twice and a third from David Jones. The three goals were mere consolation goals in a 9-3 defeat with 3,000 supporters watching on.

Southampton were the hosts for a 1958 Division Three game at the Dell. 14,972 supporters watched as the Saints claimed a 4-2 victory with the Bury goals coming from Tom Neill and Bill Ritchie.

1977 brought the first victory for the Shakers, other than the expunged game in 1890, with a 2-0 victory against Millwall in the League Cup. This 3rd Round replay took place at Gigg Lane in front of 5,725 supporters and goals from Andy Rowland and Ian Robins secured the victory and a home tie against current Division One leaders West Bromwich Albion – but that one is a story for another day.

1983 brought Stockport County to Gigg Lane for a Division Four game. Just 2,547 supporters were on hand to see Bury win the game 2-1 thanks to goals from John Bramhall and Paul Hilton.

2003 brought Yeovil Town to Gigg Lane for the very first time. 3,086 supporters were on hand to see Bury win the game 2-1 thanks to goals from Paul O'Shaughnessy with his one and only goal (pictured), and Lee Unsworth.

The last recorded game took place on 1st November 2014 when Cambridge United visited Bury for a League Two clash. Nicky Adams and Danny Rose scored a goal each in a 2-0 victory for the Shakers with 3,074 supporters attending the game.
