On This Day....

The 21st November for the Shakers begins in the club's very first season and a home friendly against Irwell Springs. Am established local side in the day, Irwell Springs are still around but under a different name and are now known as Bacup Borough. The 1885 game was won by the Shakers with a 4-1 victory, though the goal scorers and attendance are unknown.

Bury were one of the founding clubs for the Lancashire League and their progress in this new structure was outstanding; second in the first season (1889/90) and champions for the next two seasons.

The 1891/92 Championship season brought Southport to Gigg Lane, where a crowd of 3,000 were thoroughly entertained with ten goals and a 7-3 victory for the Shakers, thanks to goals from Bourn (4), Conway, Pemberton and Jack Plant.

The first Football League fixture fell in 1896 and a First Division clash away at Sheffield United. 7,000 supporters watched as the game finished 2-2, with Joe Henderson and Harry Millar grabbing the Shakers' goals.

An away trip to Preston North End for a First Division clash came in 1908, and it proved to be a successful trip for the Shakers, thanks to a 2-0 victory in front of 11,000 fans. Bury's goals came from Teddy Bullen and Tom Kay.

1931 saw the Shakers in Division Two and an away fixture with Manchester United. Only 8,000 supporters were at the game as two goals from JR Smith won the game 2-1.

1953/54 saw Bury on the road and a Division Two clash with Birmingham City at St Andrews. 21,000 supporters witnessed a goalless draw. The Bury line up that afternoon was as follows: -

Lew Goram, Cyril Fairclough, Eric Massey, Tom Daniel, Les Hart, Les Bardsley, Eddie Gleadall, Peter Tilley, Ken Plant, Walter Kelly and Stuart Imlach.

The 1970/71 season saw the Shakers in FA Cup action at Grimsby Town. A solitary Tom White goal (pictured at the top of the page) was enough to earn the Shakers a Second-Round tie at home against Notts County.

Bristol Rovers were visitors to Gigg Lane in 1987 for Third Division game, where 2,356 supporters witnessed two goals from Liam Robinson, plus strikes from Jamie Hoyland and Sammy McIlroy, record a Bury 4-1 victory.

2006 brought an FA Cup First Round replay with non-league Weymouth to Gigg Lane, and the Shakers were certainly tested. Two goals from Dwayne Mattis and two goals from Andy Bishop were enough to secure a 4-3 victory in a close-fought game.

The last recorded game on this day took place last season and a home victory over Shrewsbury Town. A 56th minute Greg Leigh goal was enough to claim a rare win for the Shakers in front of 3,055 supporters.
