On This Day

23rd November starts with a 1-1 draw against Southport Central, in a result that counted for nothing as the game was eventually abandoned. The Lancashire League game took place in 1889 at Gigg Lane and was the victim of heavy fog. George Bourn had scored the Bury goal in front of 3,000 supporters. The game was eventually replayed the following April and finished 1-1.

1901 brought Notts County to Gigg Lane for a First Division game. Just 5,000 supporters attended the game, which brought a Bury 3-0 victory thanks to goals from Jack Plant, Chris Sagar and Albert Monks.

A Lancashire Cup First Round replay with Manchester City in 1904 was watched by just 1,200 supporters and they were certainly treated to a thriller, with seven goals scored in the game. Bury won the game 4-3 with the goals coming from Morton (2), Joe Leeming and Billy Wood.

Glossop North End visited Gigg Lane in 1912 for a Second Division game and it turned into a good day for Bury striker Wally Smith, as he scored all four of the Bury goals in a 4-1 win, with 5,000 supporters watching on.

A 1925 Lancashire Cup Second Round game with Blackburn Rovers in 1925 proved to be a fruitful visit to Ewood Park for the Shakers. Just 3,000 supporters witnessed a Bury 3-1 win, thanks to goals from Wally Amos (2) and Norman Bullock.

Blackburn Rovers provided the opposition again in 1940, though this time in the Northern War League. The game, played at Gigg Lane, was watched by 2,500 supporters, and provided the same result as the 1925 game, with a 3-1 victory. The goals came from Burdett (2), and George Davies.

1957 brought Darlington to Gigg Lane for a Division Three North game. A crowd of 19,687 spent the afternoon being thoroughly entertained by the Shakers, as they recorded a 5-0 victory thanks to goals from John Willie Parker (3) (pictured below), Bill Ritchie and Johnny Robinson.

The FA Cup campaign of 1974 saw the Shakers reach the Fourth Round, but to start the campaign off – a home game with Southport in the First Round. 5,709 supporters witnessed the Shakers progress with a fine 4-2 victory, thanks to goals from Derek Spence (2) and Chris Duffey (2).

Bury's promotion season of 2010/11 was littered with fine performances and results. None more so than the visit to Lincoln City's Sincil Bank. Bury ran amok with goals and recorded a 5-0 victory thanks to goals from Andy Haworth, Nicky Ajose (2) (pictured at the top of the page) and Ryan Lowe (2).

The last recorded game on this day was in the 2013/14 season and a home game with AFC Wimbledon. Danny Hylton put Bury in front before the Dons hit back in the second half. The game finished 1-1 with 2,775 supporters attending.
