On This Day...27th November

The club's history shows the first recorded game on 27th November as being at home against West Manchester. The game took place in 1886 and as there was no recognised leagues in the area, the fixture list for the season consisted of nothing but friendly games. This game finished 0-0 and as we see with many of the early games, an attendance for the game was not recorded.

The first Football League fixture took place in 1897 and a home game with Notts County. As with the previous game, the result was a 0-0 with a crowd of approximately 3,000 in attendance.

1909 saw Bury away in the capital and a Division One game with Woolwich Arsenal. Attendances in the early days were rounded up and only an 'approximate' gate was published. The figure shown for this game is 7,000, though the Shakers suffered with a 2-1 defeat with Billy Hibbert (shown below) scoring the Bury goal.

The Shakers would not win a game on the 27th November until 1946 when they faced Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park in the Second Round of the Lancashire Cup. 1,700 supporters were on hand to witness Bury move to the next stage of the competition with a 4-2 victory, thanks to goals from Eddie Quigley, Jim McGill, Bobby Reid and John Lindsay.

Two years later and Barnsley visited Gigg Lane for a Second Division game. 13,313 supporters watched on as goals from Bob Crosbie (2), Harry Whitworth and Alf Bellis (shown below) secured a 4-2 victory.

1971 saw the Shakers languishing in the bottom tier of English football and Northampton Town arrived at Gigg Lane for a Division Four game. Just 2,895 supporters were on hand to witness the Shakers record another 4-2 victory at home, with the goals coming from George Jones (2), John Connelly and John Murray.

Darlington arrived in Bury in 1993 for a Division Three game (tier four). Only 2,052 fans watched the game as Bury ran riot in front of goal and recorded a 5-1 victory with the goals coming from Tony Kelly (2), Tony Rigby and a brace for Mark Carter (pictured below).

Into a new century and Bury were away at Swansea City for a Division Two (tier four) game at the Vetch in 2004. Most of the 6,971 supporters on hand left feeling miserable after the Shakers recorded a fine 3-1 victory. Kevin Nugent put Swansea ahead after only 90 seconds, only for our own David Nugent to equalise more or less straight from the re-start. Dwayne Mattis then put the Shakers in front with seven minutes gone before Brian Barry-Murphy sealed the victory with a stunning free kick some three minutes before time.

The last recorded game on this day took place in 2010 when Bury faced Peterborough United at home in the second round of the FA Cup. Ryan Lowe scored the Bury goal in a 2-1 defeat in front of 2,514 supporters.
