On this day for today’s date begins with an 1890 Lancashire Cup tie away at Kearsley. With a crowd of just 500 supporters watching, the Shakers romped to a 6-0 victory with the goals coming from Bourn 2, Cooper 2, Plant and Whiteside.
1902 brought the first Football League game with a Division One tie against Bolton Wanderers at Gigg Lane. A strong crowd of 11,000 gathered for the game which brought both points for the Shakers, with a 3-0 win thanks to goals from John Berry (2) and Billy Wood.
The Shakers would fall into a barren run in terms of victories on this day and would not win another game until 1955. Between 1902 and 1952 a game with Manchester United in the Manchester Cup was lost 4-0 in 1911, a 3-1 defeat at Bradford Park Avenue in 1913, a 2-1 defeat at Clapton Orient in 1919, a 4-0 defeat at Burnley in 1924, a 3-1 defeat at Stoke City in 1930 and a 1941 War League 4-0 defeat at Preston North End.
Slightly more positive was a 2-2 draw against Brentford in 1947. This was a Division Two game played at Gigg Lane in front of 12,896 supporters, with the Bury goals coming from Eddie Kilshaw and Jimmy Constantine.
Blackburn Rovers were visitors to Gigg Lane in 1952 for a Division Two game that attracted a strong crowd of 17,473 supporters. Walter Kelly scored the only goal of the game to hand victory to the Shakers.
A historic night fell for the Shakers in 1977 when runaway First Division leaders West Bromwich Albion visited Gigg Lane for a League Cup Fourth Round tie. The Baggies fielded their strongest possible side but were no match for the Shakers as a solitary Ian Robins goal, who had scored in every round of the competition thus far, handed the Shakers a 1-0 victory in front of 13,898 supporters on a cold and foggy evening (see main image at the top of the page).
1980 brought Wimbledon to Bury for a Division Four game. A crowd of just 2,392 supporters were on hand to see Paul Hilton score the only goal of the game.
The last recorded game on this day took place in 2014 when Dagenham & Redbridge visited Bury for a League Two game. 3,042 supporters were on hand to witness a 2-0 defeat.
