On this Day – 31 October

31 October 2018

The very first game played on 31st October was only the clubs 9th every game – a friendly clash with Blackburn Rovers Reserves on 31 October 1885 – Sadly history has recorded nothing else from this game with the result, goal scorers and attendance unknown.

1896 brought Division One action to Gigg Lane and a local derby game with Bolton Wanderers.  13,500 supporters watched as goals from Harry Millar and Jack Plant secured a 2-2 draw.

Notts County arrived at Gigg Lane in 1908 for a Division One game.  9,000 supporters watched as the Shakers won the game 3-1 with goals from a Billy Hibbert hat trick (One from a penalty).

A visit to Leeds United’s Elland Road Stadium in 1925 brought more success for the Shakers with a 3-2 victory in front of 15,000 supporters.  Norman Bullock scored two goals with the third coming from Wally Amos.

A 1936 Division Two clash with Burnley at Gigg Lane attracted a crowd of 21,721 supporters, with the majority of them leaving happy following a Bury 3-1 victory thanks to two goals from Arthur Buttery and a third from Ernie Matthews.

The North West War League Division One game with Everton in 1942 saw 2,740 supporters at Gigg Lane, where they witnessed a fine 4-1 victory thanks to goals from Don Carter, Reg Halton and two from George Davies – one from a penalty.

1959 saw Bury heading to Saltergate and a Division Three game with Chesterfield.  Bill Calder and Johnny Hubbard were on target in a 2-0 victory in front of 8,204 supporters.

1961 brought a testimonial for former player Johnny Robinson.  An all-Star XI side played against the Shakers in front of 3,516 supporters.  Brian Turner and ‘Twist’ scored the two Bury goals in a 4-2 defeat.

1972 brought the mighty Chelsea to Gigg Lane for a League Cup 4th Round game where a crowd of 16,226 supporters watched as the first division giants scraped through after a resolute Shakers performance by winning the game 1-0.

Northampton Town arrived at Gigg Lane in 1981 for a Division Four fixture and left some two hours later following a great 7-1 win for the Shakers.  3,459 supporters watched as goals from Stevie Johnson (2), Craig Madden (3), Pat Howard and Paul Hilton won the game for Bury.

A long away trip to Torquay United in 1995 for a Division Three (Tier four) game attracted a crowd of just 1,456 supporters, who saw the Shakers take all three points with a 2-0 victory thanks to goals from Chris Lucketti and Phil Stant.

The last recorded game on this day took place in 2015 and saw seven goals scored at Gigg Lane with a 4-3 victory over Blackpool in League One (Tier 3).  The goals came from Danny Rose (2) (Pictured celebrating his second goal at the top of the page), Chris Hussey and Tom Soares with 5,013 supporters watching.
