On this Day – 1st October...
Seven goals were scored by the Shakers on 1st October on two occasions, the first comes way back in 1887 and our first recorded game on this day. It was a Lancashire Cup fixture with Darwen at Gigg Lane with 1,500 supporters on the gate, with goals from Lomax (3), Ross (2), Hitching and Richardson.
We saw another seven goals in 1910, though this time it was a 5-2 win for the Shakers against Manchester City in the First Division. 20,000 supporters watched as Billy Hibbert hit a hat-trick, plus goals from Tom Kay & Bob Currie secured the two points.
1927 saw the Shakers back in the First Division and 10,379 fans were on hand to witness an eight-goal thriller against Sunderland with the Shakers scoring five again, with goals from Wally Amos (2), John Ball (2) and Dave Robbie.
1949 brought Leicester City to Gigg Lane for a Second Division game. Bury won the game 3-0 with goals from a Bill Griffiths' penalty, Harold Bodle and Fred Worthington with 17,178 attending the game.
1960/61 season, arguably the club's best season of league football, saw the Shakers visiting Tranmere Rovers and for the second time on this day, Bury hit seven goals with a 7-1 victory in front of a crowd of 9,512 supporters. Goals came from Allan Jackson (2), a Don Watson hat-trick, Bill Holden and Brian Turner (pictured below).
1985/86 saw Wolverhampton Wanderers arrive at Gigg Lane. The Shakers would survive the season finishing in 20th position, whilst Wolves suffered a miserable campaign by finishing second from bottom. This game would do them no favours as goals from Kevin Young, Craig Madden and Lee Dixon would secure a 3-1 win with 3,220 supporters watching.
The 2011/12 season saw Bury make the long trip south and a visit to Yeovil Town’s Huish Park. Giles Coke (Pictured above), David Amoo and Peter Sweeney would all find the target in a Shakers' 3-1 victory.
The last recorded game on this day took place in the 2016/17 season and a home fixture with Scunthorpe United in League One. Tom Soares scored the only Bury goal of the game in what would end with a 2-1 defeat.
