Southport provided the opposition for a Division Three game in 1969 but left Gigg Lane on the wrong end of a seven-goal thriller as the Shakers won the game 4-3 with just 4,907 supporters watching. The Bury goals came from Ben Anderson, Brian Grundy, Jimmy Kerr and George Jones.

The Bury side that day was as follows: -

Neil Ramsbottom, Ray Parnell, Mike Saile, Brian Turner, Ben Anderson, Alex Rae, Greg Farrell, George Jones, Ian Towers, Jimmy Kerr, Brian Grundy - with David Holt on the bench

:
