On This Day...12th October

An 1889 Lancashire League clash at West Manchester kicks off 'On This Day' on 12th October, and with a hat-trick from Bob Conway, plus a fourth from George Bourn – a healthy 4-0 victory was claimed in front of 5,000 supporters.

Onto the first season in the top tier of English football and the visit of Small Heath to Gigg Lane. 5,000 supporters watched on as goals from Tom Wyllie, Joe Henderson, Frank Collinson and Jack Plant were not enough to secure a victory as Small Heath won the game 5-4.

Stoke City were the visitors to Gigg Lane on 12th October 1901 for a First Division clash. 7,500 supporters were at the game as a Charlie Sagar brace, and one each for Billy Wood and Albert Monks secured a 4-2 victory.

1912 brought Wolverhampton Wanderers to Bury for a Division Two game. A single goal from Billy Peake claimed both points for the Shakers in front of 8,000 supporters.

Leicester City arrived in Bury in 1935 for a Second Division clash and were to leave later in the day with nothing after a Bury 3-0 victory, the goals coming from Arthur Buttery, Ernie Matthews and Billy Graham grabbing the goals.

Wrexham came to Bury in in 1957 for a Division Three North game with the Shakers. 15,346 supporters watched as a brace from John Parker and a further strike from Jimmy Reid secured the points for Bury.

1974 brought Charlton Athletic north for a Division Three game at Gigg Lane. Derek Spence was in form that day, as a brace of goals from the Northern Ireland international striker secured a 2-1 victory for Bury.

The Bury side that afternoon was as follows: -

John Forrest, Steve Hoolickin, Keith Kennedy, Brian Williams, John Hulme, David Holt, George Buchan, Andy Rowland, Derek Spence, Alan Tinsley, George Hamstead.

The 1974/75 squad is shown above in the main image for this page and lines up as follows: -

Back Row (L to R): John Hulme, John Thompson, Alan Tinsley, Charlie Gisbourne
Middle Row: Billy Rudd, Jimmy Nicolson, John Forrest, Terry Gennoe, David Holt, Derek Spence
Front Row: John Murray, Steve Melledew, Keith Kennedy, Brian Williams, Steve Hoolickin, George Hamstead

On 12th October 1996, the Shakers made a Division Two (Tier Three) trip to Peterborough's London Road. A season that would finish with the Shakers as Champions, saw success as Rob Matthews and David Johnson secured a 2-1 victory for Bury, though David Johnson would see red for 'over-celebrating' his goal and a second yellow card. 6,003 supporters were on-hand.

The last recorded game on this day took place in 2013 and brought a home 2-0 defeat at the hands of Morecambe.
