On This Day...16th October
In terms of games, history for the Shakers begins in 1886 and a Lancashire Cup 2nd round game with Brierfield Swifts. The side from the Pendle area won the game 1-0, though history shows they vanished from the footballing world after 1910.
An 1897 Division One game with Derby County at the Baseball Ground was the next game to be played on this day. Originally the home of Derby County Baseball Club, the footballing branch of the club would eventually take over the Stadium some two years before this meeting with the Shakers. With 8,000 supporters attending, the game finished 2-2 thanks to goals from Jack Plant and Joe Henderson.
1909 brought Preston North End to Gigg Lane for a Division One clash. A crowd of 12,000 watched as goals from Alec Rae, Billy Hibbert and James Raeside won the game 3-1 for the Shakers.
Bury made another trip to Derbyshire some 38 years later, though this time for a Division Two game at Chesterfield's Saltergate. 17,700 supporters watched on as Bury won the game 2-1 thanks to goals from George Davies and Bob Hulbert.
1948 brought Blackburn Rovers to Bury for a Division Two game. This local derby game attracted a crowd of 28,456 supporters and a 3-1 victory for the Shakers thanks to goals from Alf Bellis (2) and Dave Massart.
Birmingham City came to Bury in 1965 for a Second Division game. 8,184 supporters watched as goals from Ray Pointer (2), Ray Parry, Colin Bell and Ronnie Bird secured a 5-1 victory.
Bury would not win another game on this day until the 1993 season when Doncaster Rovers hosted the Shakers at the Belle Vue ground for a Division Three (tier 4) game. Ian Stevens and a brace of goals from David Adekola were enough to secure a 3-1 victory in front of just 2,613 supporters.
The 1999/2000 season saw the Shakers back in the third tier following their meteoric rise to the second tier of English Football. With Neil Warnock in charge as Manager, the Shakers made the short trip to Blackpool for a Division Two clash. 5,270 supporters watched on as Bury went goal crazy on the day. Chris Swailes, Chris Billy, Ian Lawson (Billy & Lawson pictured in the main image at the top of the page), Paul Barnes and an own goal from John Hills secured a 5-0 victory away from home.
2010 saw Bury on the road to the West Country and a League Two game with Torquay United. Two goals in each half secured a fine 4-3 victory for Bury, with goals from Ryan Lowe, Nicky Ajose, Steven Schumacher and Mike Jones.
The last recorded game on this day took place in the 2012/13 season, when Carlisle United came to BL9. Zac Thompson, on loan from Leeds United, scored the Shakers' goal in a 1-1 draw, with just 1,913 supporters watching.
