On This Day...19th October

19 October 2018

'On This Day' for the 19th October begins with an emphatic 5-1 victory at Gigg Lane. A friendly game at Gigg Lane in 1889 against Nelson with 1,500 supporters watching. The goals came from Swinton (2), Bourn, Conway and Humphreys. Bizarrely, the club also played Little Hulton in the Lancashire Cup on the same day, the game was away from Gigg Lane and finished 4-4 after extra time with the goals coming from a Hawksley hat-trick and Fitton.

1908 brought more Lancashire Cup action with a second-round replay against Colne. The first game at Gigg Lane finished 2-2 and the Shakers went into this replay game looking to get to the Third Round and a tie with Liverpool. Bury won the game 4-2 with Billy Hibbert scoring 2, plus goals from Jackie Dewhurst and Tom Millington.

1929 saw the Shakers on the road and a Division Two clash with Bristol City. 14,000 supporters watched as goals from Wally Amos and Harry Brant secured a 2-1 victory.

1954 brought Blackpool to Gigg Lane for a friendly game. 13,039 supporters were entertained to a 3-2 Shakers victory, with two goals from Walter Kelly and a third from Tommy Daniel.

On 19th October 1982, Stockport County were the visitors at Gigg Lane for a Division Four game. Just 2,447 supporters were on-hand to witness a 3-2 win with Paul Hilton, Franny Firth and Stevie Johnson all on target.

1996 saw Watford visit Gigg Lane for a Division Two (third tier) game. The return game at Vicarage Road later that season would turn out to be a more historic game, but this match finished all square with a 1-1 draw, with the Bury goal coming from Mark Carter.

A 2002 away trip to Rushden & Diamonds brought success for the Shakers with a 1-0 victory thanks to a Chris Billy (pictured at the top of the page) goal. 3,925 supporters were on-hand to see the game.

A 2004 home game with Boston United in League Two brought a 1-1 draw. 2,001 supporters watched as Dave Challinor gave Bury a 10th minute lead, then watched as the same player converted into his own net – the game finished 1-1.

The last recorded game on this day took place in 2013 and a League Two clash at Fratton Park with Portsmouth. The game finished with a 1-0 defeat with 15,434 supporters watching.
