On This Day...4th October

The first game played on 4th October took place in 1890 and a Lancashire League game away at Blackpool. 4,000 supporters watched as goals from Cooper (2) and Bob Conway recorded a 3-3 draw.

Derby County provided the opposition in a First Division game at Gigg Lane in the 1902/03 season. 11,000 supporters were in the ground as a single goal from Tom Gray recorded a 1-0 victory. The two sides would meet again that season, some seven months later – in the FA Cup Final where a far better outcome for the Shakers would come, but that is for another day...

1913 saw Bury on the road and a trip to the nation's capital for a Division Two game with Woolwich Arsenal. Billy Cameron scored the only goal of the game to give the Shakers a 1-0 victory in front of 30,000 supporters.

1924 brought Sheffield United to Gigg Lane for a First Division match, where 20,337 supporters watched another 1-0 victory for the Shakers with future manager Norman Bullock scoring the only goal.

Bradford City visited Gigg Lane on 4th October 1930 for a Second Division game, and goals from JR Smith (2) and Dave Robbie secured a 3-1 victory with 9,706 fans attending.

1952 brought Birmingham City to Bury, with just over 16,000 supporters in. The Shakers won this Second Division tie 3-0, thanks to goals from Ken Plant (2) and Bobby Dale.

Rochdale popped down the road in 1958 for a Division Three game at Gigg Lane. 11,865 supporters watched on as a buoyant Shakers side romped to a 6-1 victory thanks to goals from Ian McIntosh (2), John Parker (2) and Harry Darbyshire (2).

The Bury side that day was as follows: -

Frank Adams (pictured above), Brian Howcroft, Bobby Conroy, Tommy Neill, John McGrath, Gordon Atherton, Tony McNamara, Ian McIntosh, Harry Darbyshire, John Parker, Jim Lovie

Two years later and Halifax Town arrived at Gigg Lane for a Division Three game, where 13,340 supporters were on-hand to witness a 4-1 victory for the Shakers thanks to goals from Don Watson, Allan Jackson (2) and Bill Holden.

Bury would not win again on this day until the 1988/89 season, when Reading arrived for a Third Division game. Just 2,027 supporters were watching as goals Steve Elliott and David Lee won the game 2-1.

Tranmere Rovers came to Bury in 2014 for a League Two game. With 4,481 fans in the ground, goals from Kelvin Etuhu and Daniel Nardiello secured a 2-0 victory, but it would be the reverse game at Prenton Park on the final day of the season that would turn out to be more memorable.

The last recorded game on this day came in 2016 when Bradford City won the Checkatrade Trophy game at Valley Parade with a 2-1 victory, the Bury goal coming from Tom Walker.
