On This Day...5th October

5 October 2018

October the 5th features only 22 games since the club was formed in 1885, of which we have won seven, drawn five and lost the remaining ten.

The very first game played on today's date was in the 1889/90 season and a Lancashire League game against Fleetwood Rangers. 2,000 supporters watched on as goals from Bourn, Humphreys and two from Fielding secured a 4-0 victory.

The 1895/96 season saw the Shakers in the top tier of English Football for the first time, having only joined the Football League the year before. 5th October 1895 saw the Shakers on the road to a game against near neighbours Bolton Wanderers. Goals from Joe Henderson, Billy Barbour (2) and an own goal from Bolton's Jones secured a 4-2 victory for the Shakers in front of 10,000 supporters.

In 1901, FA Cup holders Bury made another short trip for an away game at Blackburn Rovers. A crowd of 5,000 supporters, who we presume were mostly locals, had a thoroughly miserable afternoon as a Billy Wood hat-trick made sure the two points were in the back of the Shakers charabanc for the short trip back to Gigg Lane.

Towards the close of their glittering careers with the Shakers, the players of Bury entertained Billy Wood and Billy Richards in connection with their benefit matches versus Newcastle United on 18th March 1905.

During the evening, both players were presented with a cheque for £243, this representing the proceeds of the match, less ground expenses incurred. Of this sum, £78 had been received by the sale of tickets, the remainder representing the takings at the gate.

Billy Wood was a member of both Bury's FA Cup winning teams of 1900 and 1903, gaining his first medal after only twelve months experience of League Football. An enthusiastic and energetic type of player whose constructive ideas showed class, he was also a capable marksman who scored twice in his only appearance for the Football League in November 1901.

His move to Fulham was not a success as he played insufficient games to win a Southern League medal in 1905, but he scored 15 goals in 46 games for Norwich City and 12 in 30 games for Leyton.

He wound up his career with New Brompton. Sadly, Billy died at the age of 69 at Oldham Royal Infirmary in October 1947. In total, Billy Wood played 210 games for Bury, and scored 70 goals.

The Second World War brought wartime football back to England and a Northern War League game with Oldham Athletic in 1940 at Boundary Park. It was a success for Bury with a 4-3 victory, 5,000 supporters watched as four goals from George Davies secured the win.

Bury would not win again on this day until 1991, when a Division Three game saw Bury visit Feethams, the old Darlington ground. Just over 3,000 supporters watched as two Ian Stevens goals won the game with a 2-1 victory.

2010 brought Shrewsbury Town to Gigg Lane for a Second Round Johnstones Paint Trophy game. The game finished goal-less and was won 6-5 on penalties, with Shakers 'keeper Cameron Belford scoring the decisive penalty for the Shakers (shown in the main image celebrating the victory).

The Bury side that evening was as follows:-

Cameron Belford, Phil Picken, Joe Skarz, Tom Lees, Ben Futcher, Andy Haworth (David Worrall), Kyle Bennett, Damien Mozika, Peter Sweeney, Lenell John-Lewis (Ryan Lowe) and Nicky Ajose. Unused subs were Richie Branagan, Efe Sodje and Max Harrop

The last recorded game on this day took place in the 2013/14 season and saw Newport County at Gigg Lane, though the game finished 0-0 with just 3,093 supporters on the gate.
